mpeg2 in and out points
I have a DVD with more than 20 PSAs. Is there a way for cablecast to play these PSAs individually? I.e set "in and out" points on the mpeg file.

There isn't a good way to set multiple in and out points for a single mpeg file in Cablecast. You can use the cue and length properties of media to set the start and end of the usable portions of a video file, but you can only set one cue and one length for each individual piece of media.
If I were you, I'd split the mpeg file into 20 shorter files, and make each one a standalone show in Cablecast. Perhaps adding each to a "PSAs" project so they're easier to find when scheduling.
Depending on how the PSAs were mastered onto the DVD, our DVD Import utility might be able to split them for you, based on the title sets. Otherwise, I'd use an mpeg trimming tool like Mpeg2Cut to split the large file into 20 individual files.

Inappropriate?John,
Is there a way to put all the clips together? I have programs that we record from our studio. In the past when we went to break and rotated sets we would assemble edit back into segment two, etc. So now when we record the file in Cablecast we want to take out those black segments. Unfortunately Mpeg2Cut is great for clipping beginning and end, but I didn't see anyway to cut out the middle segments. Any suggestions?

I’m indifferent

Inappropriate? The only way I know how to re-assemble and take out content is to bring the clips into an NLE, like Final Cut or Avid (or the editor of your choice)

Inappropriate?Hey Jon,
I'm with JJ, I'm not aware of anything that can edit video like that, except full-blown editors like Final Cut, etc.
Does anyone else out there know of a solution?

I’m hoping that someone might have a good idea

Inappropriate? The other idea we had was to cut each segment and make it a reel in a show. So there would be essentially three reels (or segments) for one show. Does that make sense? Is that logical? Sales reps have asked us about take one show and inserting different commercials when it is replayed at different times. Any suggestions or comments from a Tightrope stand point? Would this be an easy solution? I'm just thinking taking a program and putting it into Final Cut and then sending it back would be a lot of extra rendering, etc.
I’m happy

Inappropriate? You could use MPEG2Cut or whatever to get the parts of your show as separate files on the server, then schedule them as reels, or even separate shows, in the correct sequence, without having to edit them. For instance, if you wanted to play 5:01-10:37 and 15:36-20:00 out of the file, duplicate the file, then use MPEG2Cut to chop out each of those segments. Save them as <showid>-1.mpg and <showid>-2.mpg, make both reels in Cablecast then the video server will do the editing for you.
We have a customer that is doing this at the showID level, he has several portions of his show that never change, so he schedules those shows around the part that does change and lets the SX do the final composition, quite slick.
In 4.8 we'll have full support for "Shortcuts", so you'll be able to copy your MPEG file onto the server, make a shortcut to it on the server and give it a name for a different showID, then have separate show records that have different cue times and lengths within the same file to accomplish the same sort of thing.</showid></showid> -
Inappropriate? Will the whole show play all on one SX player? Or will that 30 min. show us up multiple players as it cues up each reel? That might be an issue for us as we have 4 channels to control and if there is programming on the other three (so SX players 1-3 are used) then we only have SX player 4 for this multi-reel show.

Inappropriate?Right now the SX will need 5 seconds to switch reels or start playing a different show, so that would be a problem for you right now. Look for that to change in the near future, though.
