Multi-Function Server???
Ok It's possible we could actually be moving into the 21st Century and going from tape based playback to server. Here is my concerns:
We have about 15 hours of new programming a week which is mastered onto DVC Pro. This would equal 15 hours of encoding time...translation: lots of staff time. With a tape based system, we spend 0 hours on encoding. Sooooo if I'm going to switch, I would want to get some benefits with it and the first things I'd be looking for is to be able to dump down all encoded programs to DVD direct from the server. Essential it would double as a high-speed dub machine of programs. That is a big concern of mine. Does anyone do this or is it possible?

I have this question, too!
Tell me when someone answers.
The more people who ask this question, the more it gets noticed.

Inappropriate? We do take the finished mpeg files that play on our server and import them into a DVD authoring program (Avid DVD) and do make DVDs from them. It works quite well and only takes a few minutes per show.
Any chance your mastered programs can be encoded to mpeg instead of or in addition to DVCPRO? That would save you the step of encoding off the tape. We produce 2 half hour shows a week and encode them directly to the server as mpeg2 for playback. They don't touch DVDs till I get a chance to archive them several weeks later. We are also looking to take our long forum programming (30min-90min) and using tightrope's DVD import utility to move all those DVD based playback shows onto upgraded storage for server playback. We are waiting till we get back from NAB before we decide on what storage solution to go with. Will probabbly be more than 3TB in size. Our goal is to move to 100% server based playback and keep the DVD players as backups or one time quick plays. -
Inappropriate? You could use the Record on First Run feature and record to MPEG the first time the tape plays. You would take an output from your routing switcher and connect it to an encoder. (You get an encoder in a VS4)
You are mastering to DVC Pro is this from an NLE??? If so render out the MPEG file and send it to the server. If you are going live to tape I would suggest a third party encoder. I just got one with a canopus MVR2200 card with simple to use software for the volunteers that produce their own shows. (Yes this card is high priced but the software is easy enough for the non tech user. You know the one who can hardly turn on a computer.) -
Inappropriate?DSLWIzard,
Is the avid software on your server or do you have it networked with another computer and burn it from that? -
Inappropriate? The Avid DVD is installed on our Avid editing system and is a networked machine and can "see" all the mpeg files on the server over the network. You could do the same with Adobe Encore or I imagine DVD Studio Pro on the mac. If you are editing tape to tape (and who still does that these days? ;-)
Then you would need to do as seanfichera suggests and use the encoder that might be installed in your server or purchase a 3rd party card to do the encoding. Otherwise, if you are editing on a NLE, you should be able to encode using a software encoder like Procoder, Cleaner or others.
Good Luck
