No Signal Default to Carousel
Is there a way to set up a no signal default to Carousel? For instance when running our school committee meeting live I can set it up to start but I have to be available to switch it back to Carousel. Can this be automated?
Thanks!

Inappropriate?Hey Paul...
Are you looking for a way to prevent a switch from happening when a live meeting or event runs long? If so, Cablecast has an "automation override" feature which prevents switches from happening on your channel until such time as you're ready to resume regular automation. The cool part is that Cablecast keeps track of what is supposed to be going on so you can join shows "already in progress."
For details, check out the Cablecast 4.8.3 manual on our documenation page. Flip to page 263, and towards the bottom of the page you'll see a section called "Overriding a Channel for Live Programming and Automating Live Programs." That should tell you what you need to know.
I hope this helps!

Inappropriate?Hi John,
My situation is that we have a live school meeting today. I obviously don't know for sure how long it run or if it'll even start on time so inputting an end time is impossible. I won't be around a computer to make the switch when the meeting is over so once the camera operator in the committee room goes black there is no going to the Carousel until I get to a computer unless I'm missing something. Is there a way for the the system to switch when the cameras go off (no signal) to make the switch to Carousel? Hmm now that I'm typing this it is probably more of a function of the Knox switcher.

Inappropriate?Hey Paul,
The override feature sounds perfect, except for the part about not being near a computer to un-override it at the end of the meeting. :-\
Cablecast doesn't have any built-in way of automatically switching on signal loss, but there are some devices out there that do. We've had pretty great success with the Spyglass unit from our friends at Media Control Systems. It's built to sense various failures (signal loss, frozen video, audio loss, etc) and switch to a backup input when problems occur. In your case, you'd want to switch back to Carousel when the meeting camera shuts off.
It might be worth checking that out.

Inappropriate?Paul, we have a "valid video detector" made by Burst Electronics. The model is the VSA, Composite Video Sensor. It costs about $250.00. You plug the output of your Knox switcher into the 'A' input of the VSA, and Carousel into the 'B' input. Then, when the unit senses a loss of video on the 'A' side, it will automatically switch to the 'B' side until video is restored. It's stereo audio-follows-video, so when video switches, so does the audio associated with it.
You may also need a distribution amplifier to get two good feeds of Carousel; one for your normal Knox input, and one for the 'B' input of the VSA. This configuration has worked very well for us, as we are in the same situation as you with all the meetings we cover!
Good luck...
