Question about MPG files on server....
Howdy,
So I got this cablecast machine. It works great. I was wondering if anyone has ran into this issue.
I shared and mapped the content drive on the cablecast machine. On my Windows and Mac computers I can connect to the drive and view, rename, move, and delete files. When I open the mpg files I can see and hear the file, depending on the computer it opens in either Windows Media or Quicktime.
I'm looking to import that file onto one of the NLEs. Lets say I copy the file from the content drive and put it on my Final Cut machine. I can open the file in Quicktime and see and hear everything. When I import the file into Final Cut there is no audio and the video has to be rendered. I don't mind the rendering part, but I cant get the audio to show up in Final Cut.
I have only tested the files that have been created from a DVD ripping software. I haven't tested the files that are created with the encoder.
Help...?
Thanks

Inappropriate? This has happened to me before - on other demuxed files (not TRMS though). QuickTime does an ok job of putting the metadata together to play both your audio and video files. Here is a suggestion. Some of this will be trial-and-error to see what codec works the best (realtime in timeline, etc).
So try this and see how it works
1. Open file in QT
One of two methods to try
1. Go to FILE > SAVE AS... Save as a self-contained movie. >SAVE
This might work just fine - but, FCP can be finicky so I would try this
1. Go to FILE > EXPORT Select Movie to QuickTime Select OPTIONS button. This dialogue box (Movie Settings) should provide you all of your installed codecs on your FCP machine. Depending on your orginal file (16x9, 4x3, DV, etc.) find a codec that makes sense (SETTINGS button) and make sure you check the compression type and size (SIZE button). You can deselect Prepare for Internet Streaming and then select OK.
This works for me as I have a need to convert HD material and de-muxed material often to web and SD cablecast. This at least might get you started on the right path. Hopefully someone here has actually used those type of TRMS demuxed files and has a sure-fire process.

Inappropriate?David,
Thanks for your response. Sadly, neither worked.
The first response didn't work. So I moved onto the next more involved one.
I tried every codec the computer gave me. I focused on the codecs with audio. In messing with the setting on the export I found out that Quicktime doesn't even realize there is audio on the clip. Quicktime plays the audio clear as day in the standalone player, but when I go to export in whatever setting I choose, the export settings say there is no audio information. I export the file, and no audio plays back. [V]

David's suggestion of exporting fron Quicktime will work, it has tended to be slow. In SD, Final Cut by default uses the DV codec. I have used 'ffmpegX' (available at versiontracker.com) to transcode all sorts of things to 720x480 DV with PCM 16-bit 48kHz audio .MOV files. Those clips come into FCP without any rerendering required, and always are synced properly.
The reason that you can't read the MPEG file directly in FCP is the audio codec used, typically AC3 (Dolby Digital) in the US is not provided by Apple.

Inappropriate?FFMPEG worked awesome. Did everything I needed it to do. Thanks to everyone who helped.
