RF interference (?) messing up my audio
I have an SXLE running 4.7.6. I am having trouble with what I think is RF interference from a nearby transmitter - my audio (on encode, preview, and playback) is corrupted by random loud burps and squawks, some of it resembling speech. Is there a way I can shield or otherwise protect my system?

Inappropriate?Usually I find audio interference is caused by a power source or cord running too close to the audio lines, where the phase of the power cord matches the sine wave of the audio signal. But if you're hearing voices (I hear the voices when I forget my meds...), you could have an issue with the audio lines running into your SX unit. Check to see if the cables used are balanced, as these normally use well shielded cable stock. If you are stuck using an unbalanced line (such as an RCA cable), try repositioning your lines to get off the phase of the phantom RF. Are you aware of a nearby transmitter that may be the issue?
I’m hoping this helps

Inappropriate?Yep - there are 2 possible RF offenders. My office and server are in my town's city hall - along with the police dept., and, I assume, their comm. transmitter. Also, there is a CB/shortwave hobby shop just across the road (~30-40 yards away) with a fairly large aerial array attached to their building. I will try repositioning the wires to try to avoid the phase interference, looking for the obvious prob - e.g. a power cord zip-tied into a bundle of audio cables, etc. I suspect the problem is the in/out cradles on the back of my SXLE, so that's where my trouble-shooting/making will begin.
thanks!
I’m resigned

Inappropriate? If you have an older analogue audio router you may have crosstalk from an adjacent channel that is too hot
-
Inappropriate?Well, I can't say it's not cross-talk from something in my system - and I do believe my router is the culprit. My predecessor, who set up the system, saved money by building his own cables, and I don't really trust the shielding on the cable-stock he used. I am getting a bleed in of squawks across outputs, but it seems modulated by some other chatter coming in from outside the system - I've been clipping ferrite cores on everything I can reach, but the problem is still there, mocking me, ruining the media I am encoding on the SXLE as well as the programming I am outputting to my cable TV system. Sheesh.
I’m uptight

Inappropriate?Ya know, Ian, come to think of it, my channel output IS way too hot - but I can't figure out how to adjust the output gain/volume on my SXLE(!!). Makes me feel pretty dumb.
-
Inappropriate? To change the volume level on any channel, go to your desktop and click on the green "SX" logo in the system tray on the right edge of the taskbar. That will open up the System Configuration program. Click on the Playback tab and you should see all your playback channels and be able to adjust them there. The same is true for the input levels on your record channels by clicking the Record tab.
I’m hoping you don't feel so dumb

Inappropriate?I have RF experience. You'll want to make a test plan for the router. This will involve disconnecting all router inputs except one, then feed that into the system. No interference: disconnect that input and try another.
You want to divide and isolate the different components to figure out where the interference is coming in. Input, through and Output, if you can get a test with just those three kinds of components, you'll go a long way.
These three questions may help narrow it down:
1) Is interference present on black input (black burst through router and encoder)
2) Is interference present on encoded content that is played on another isolated system (say, another PC in your office.)?
3) Is interference present on a non-encoded source (line video from studio, a tape player, etc.) played to air?
I’m looking for more info

Inappropriate?Thanks for the response, David.
I can say for sure that the interference IS being encoded with new programming (#2). It is also coming through my carousel both on my channel and on my preview output.
I'm not sure about #1 and #3 - I will check on that and get back to you.
