Timing shows to avoid clipping and other newbie questions
Hello, I'm new to Cablecast and have some timing questions:
1. Our station switched from an Omneon system to Cablecast SX2. Many of our PSAs are still stored on the Omneon server and that server has been set up as a device in Cablecast. The problem comes in that those PSAs are edited with one frame of black on the front and back. Because Cablecast counts minutes/seconds and not frames, on playback the PSAs appear to "clip". My less than technical diagnosis is that we're mistiming the shows by a second or so and that we don't have enough black video pad to compensate.
My questions are:
- With digital files, how are other Cablecast users timing the length of shows and PSAs? We get differing times between Windows Media Player and VLC player (usually 1 second, but I've observed up to 5 seconds difference in reported run time). Does Cablecast have some sort of built in player/timer?
- How much black should I have on the front and back of my shows, 1 sec, 5 sec?
Apologies in advance if my terminology is off and thanks in advance for any answers or thoughts.

Inappropriate? My guess is it would depend on what hardware you have and how it's configured through cablecast.
For example, we usually edit our full-length programs with a two-second black slug at the beginning, and a 5-second slug at the end. That usually compensates for the one-second pre-roll that our VS4 server needs to start up the file, and another second for any time inconsistencies between the cablecast server and our Sigma router (which does the switching on our channels). I usually add 1-2 seconds to the program length in Cablecast, so the end won't get truncated.
Using that strategy, we usually have pretty smooth transitions from Carousel to programming and vice-versa. Other people may have other strategies?
