Trimming Programs
As analog ingest into a VS4 is imprecise, I would like to find a means of trimming the in and out points of programs. In a B&H catalog, I see an NLE called NewTek SpeedEdit, which indicates that it can deal with MPEG2 clips. Is there any reason why I can't install this on my VS4, call up a show, do a quick trim, and save it?

I personally don't have any experience with SpeedEdit (maybe someone else can chime in?), but we do have several customers who have had success using a program called Mpeg2Cut.
I've tagged a few topics that discuss it, you can view the list here:

We've also had a program called VideoReDo recommended to us, you can check it out here: http://www.videoredo.com
I hope this helps,

Inappropriate?Speed Edit's flavor of Mpg2 files may have some compatibility issues playing back on the VS4 server. I haven't experimented using the program, but the Tricaster by NewTek uses it's own flavor of Mpg2, which might a video codec specific for that machine - video plays fine, no audio. On the Tricaster, they add a audio version of the file you can timeline to the video as a work around. I'm still trying to find a better workflow - you should be able to just drag the file over and have it work.
I’m annoyed at incompatablilty

Inappropriate?I have to add my praise for mpegStreamclip it works great, is free, and runs on both Mac and PC. You do need to have Final Cut Pro or the mpeg2 library for quicktime in order for it to work with the mpeg ifles
I also like mpegstream clip for importing DVDs onto my VS4 server. It gives me the ability to trim the DVD before exporting it to the VS4.

Inappropriate?Mpeg Streamclilp is awesome and free. Highly recommended. We had the same issues with long school committee meetings containing (seemingly endless) executive sessions. Streamclip allows us to trim the beginning and end, and also cut the middles of mpeg files.
I’m figuring out how to add exclamation points

Inappropriate?Forgive me if I'm a bit paranoid about installing anything new on my VS4. I just want to make sure I have this right:
I just downloaded MPEG Streamclip 1.2 to a thumb drive. The website says it also requires a Quicktime component, so I also downloaded KL Quicktime Alternative 1.81 to the thumb drive.
So my next step is to plug the thumb drive to my VS4, and install both programs directly onto my VS4 server? Is this correct? Anything I should be alert for? -
Inappropriate?I think you should be fine to install those programs on the VS4. However if you'd rather keep the TRMS server in pristine condition, you can install the software on a separate workstation computer, and access your video files from across the network. (Set up the content drive on the VS4 as a network share.)
That way you can do your edits on a different computer, and the VS4 stays clean.
Just a suggestion. :)
