Milestones at any age
I'd love to be able to note any milestone. A few don't appear because they're supposed to be too young for it, but if they're mastering something early there's no way to mark it if tumblon says it's too soon. Could this be opened up so we can go ahead and track it sooner?

Inappropriate?Hi Natalie,
Are you asking to be able to record milestones that are not in the "normal" range for your child? For example, if your child is 2, and is developing 3-year-old milestones?
If so, you can do that by going to your child's milestone page. (Click on "Upcoming Milestones" in the profile box of the dashboard, or from your child's overview page, click "Milestones.")
You're right that the default filter is your child's current milestones. But the filter (just below your child's picture) allows you to select "past" if you want to record old milestones and add stories and photos, or "future" to look at what's to come, and record any milestones that your child is already developing - even if it is not in the "normal" window.
Does that help? Let me know if it works for you.
Best,
Graham -
This doesn't work if there are more than 12 milestones before the one you're looking for. -
Hi richandjess. Are you talking about browsing future or past milestones for a child? You're right that on the child page you only browse recent past and upcoming future milestones (e.g. for a 12 week old, you see months 1-2 for past and 3-6 for future). But it doesn't appear to me that it is limiting it to 12 milestones. Can you help me understand what's not working? -
Sorry, I meant to edit my comment before you got to it, but didn't make it in time. For any selection (future, past, whatever), there seems to be a limit on how many milestones appear (I just realized it wasn't always 12; it seems to be based on date: my 10-week-old gets milestones up to 5 months, but no further). So I can't mark any beyond that without drastic measures (like changing his age). -
No problem. Our intent on the child milestone pages is to allow you to preview and review milestones close to the age of the child. (I have a 10 week old too, so I see the same range!)
If you want to browse milestones, the best place to do it is http://tumblon.com/milestones. You can filter by any criteria, and record milestones for any of your children - provided the milestone is not too far off. (If the milestone is too distant, like "jumps on both feet" for a 10 week old, there is a note that says, "[Child's name] isn't old enough yet!"
Does that help? -
The problem I'm running into is that a lot of the milestones we notice are listed a couple months beyond his age. For example, he's been smiling at himself in the mirror for a couple weeks, but this is listed at 5-6 months, and wasn't listed under "future" milestones yet. So the only way I could get it to work was to change his age, add the milestone, and then change it back. Is there an easier way? -
You've found a very creative work-around! No, unfortunately right now there isn't a better solution. What do you think would be the most user-friendly way for us to improve this interface?
Thanks for your patience! -
Here are a couple ideas:
- Rather than displaying the "Baby is not old enough yet!" message, you could just do the "Baby has not yet accomplished this." with the record and hide buttons (in other words, don't have future milestones act any differently than current milestones). To avoid having to develop some sort of selector for which child you want to add a milestone to, you could leave the record and hide buttons off the resources > milestones list.
- Use multiple "Show more" links in a child's milestones list. The user would be able to keep showing more until they either found what they were looking for or reached the end of the list (much like Facebook now does for wall posts). -
I think that sounds good. I'll talk to our developer about how to make that change.
One last question: Do you think hitting "show more" several times is better (more intuitive) than having the age nav that is on the tumblon.com/milestones page? Or would you like to see that nav for child and simply add one more choice that is "show more"? -
I think hitting "show more" several times is probably more intuitive than navigating by age, since I'm guessing most parents don't know at exactly what age range a milestone is supposed to happen, just that their child is doing it now (at least this is the case with me). So they're going to scan through the list, most likely chronologically, until they find what they're looking for. The age nav. would probably be unnecessary in most cases and possibly annoying in some. -
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Oh great! That's what I was looking for. I was doing it from the main Milestones page (not through my dashboard) and it was saying she's "not old enough yet!" Thank you!
I’m thankful
