Animated avatar images are converted to static PNG

When uploading an image for an avatar in the Info tab at http://www.tumblr.com/customize the image is always converted to a PNG. I've seen people with animated avatars, but I can't seem to work out how to do this; every animated GIF I upload gets turned into a static PNG that only shows the first frame. How does one upload an animated image for use as an avatar on Tumblr?
