Tumblr Theming with External Text Editor

Has anyone had success using TextMate, BBEdit, or similar for editing Tumblr themes? When I load the html page up in my browser, none of the styles I have set show up. My guess is that there is a problem with Tumblr's theming tokens interfering with the HTML interpretation. Anyone had success?

I’m flummoxed.
