Broken authentication used on most tabs with Firefox 3?
Only the public and friends tabs work for me. The other tabs give me a login dialog box, but despite putting in my user name and password, it doesn't seem to properly validate me, and just throws the dialog box back up at me, over and over until I click Cancel.

Inappropriate?Sorry for your troubles, Christopher. What OS are you currently using?
-
Inappropriate?I'm running Vista SP1. Let me dump my extensions and plugins too in case any of them might possibly affect this:

Inappropriate? If you don't mind, please try disabling the extensions (except for TwitKit, of course).
-
Inappropriate?Didn't make any difference, except now even the friends tab is bringing up that damned dialog. The friends tab still works (unlike the other ones) but the dialog didn't show up on that tab before.
And with my extensions re-enabled, it's still there...
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?Okay, then.. please try clearing your cookies and cache:
Go to Edit->Preferences->Privacy, and click on 'Clear Private Data'. Select Cookies and Browser Cache in the window that opens up. (This will erase your login information from all sites - if you don't want this, click on 'View Cookies', scroll to twitter.com, and select all the cookies inside it. Then click 'Delete Cookies'.)
I’m sad that TwitKit isn't working for Christopher
-
Inappropriate?Made no difference.
BTW, it's Tools->Options->Privacy, then "Clear Now" in the Private Data group. -
Inappropriate?Oh, sorry, I'm using a different language for my OS so it was roughly translated into my language.
We've had another person who disabled all plugins and extensions, which made TwitKit work. He was able to reenable this after.. could you please try that? -
Inappropriate?Already tried it back when you originally suggested it.
-
Inappropriate? For this person (http://getsatisfaction.com/twitkit/to...) it didn't work the first time he disabled extensions and plugins. Could you please try it again?
If this doesn't work, we'll have to investigate further.. no one else seems to be having this problem. -
Inappropriate?"Second verse, same as the first!" Didn't make a difference. Not surprised, though. The other problem is dealing with styling (CSS and images); my problem is with getting a login/authentication dialog that doesn't accept my user credentials and blocks using Firefox at all (at least for that window) until I hit Cancel.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? If you are already logged in in TwitKit (which I presume you are), please try this:
Type 'about:config' into the location bar and click the button saying "I'll be careful, I promise!" (if it appears). Next, type this into the Filter box that should appear at the top of the screen:
'extensions.twitkit'
A small list of configuration options for TwitKit should appear. Search the list for 'extensions.twitkit.username' and 'extensions.twitkit.password'. Double-click them and set the values to your username and password respectively (even if they are already set as them). Then, restart your browser and try using TwitKit again.
I’m sorry

this solves the problem
-
Inappropriate?Still no good.
BTW, on a related note to that last suggestion, it would be better to use Firefox's built-in password manager for storing the login information, rather than prefs. But that's a whole different topic. -
Inappropriate?Oh! I didn't really notice it before, but the Twitter site itself is where the authentication issue is taking place. Put a screencap of it at http://members.gamedev.net/coldacid/i... with my password deleted (typed it back in after taking the pic).
-
Inappropriate?OMG I am king idiot. I forgot that I changed my password and didn't update Firefox or anything on the situation. I fail. It's working now that I've given it the correct password.
You should still look at moving the username and password into password manager and out of prefs, though.
I’m stupid

-
Inappropriate?Great! You had me worried there for a bit :P
I’m happy that Chris had his problem resolved
-
Inappropriate? This sounds similar to the problem I'm having. TwitKit works just fine for me on my Kubuntu box at home, but I have never been able to get it to sign me in on either my Win2K (Firefox 2.0.0.15) or XP (Firefox 3.0) box at work. It just sits there saying "Signing in..." forever. I tried looking at about:config, and 'extensions.twitkit.username' and 'extensions.twitkit.password' aren't even listed there! Disabling my other extensions didn't work, either.
-
Inappropriate?montuous,
It sounds like you have two options here:
1. Manually create the about:config entries with your username and password as the content
2. Try reinstalling TwitKit if you'd rather not perform #1
To add the about:config entries, right-click on the about:config page and go to New->String. Enter `extensions.twitkit.username` and `extensions.twitkit.password` for the names and your username and password respectively for their content.
Good luck! -
Inappropriate?Uninstalling and reinstalling didn't help. I tried creating the about:config entries right before I left work yesterday, with the result that it now displays my username and the sign out option -- but I still have no actual content displayed.
I don't think TwitKit is actually connecting to Twitter for me in the first place. I'm now wondering whether it's set up to use proxies, or whether it assumes a direct internet connection? -
Inappropriate?I'm fairly sure that proxies would not affect TwitKit - it utilizes a technology called AJAX to make API requests, and Firefox controls the AJAX technology - meaning it adapts the tech if needed for a proxy.
Could you try opening up the error console? Press Control+Shift+J or go to Tools->Error Console. Clear the messages, and then try opening TwitKit. Switch tabs a bit, and try logging in/out. Do any messages appear in the console? -
Inappropriate?I get no messages in the error console at all, even when I try to log out (I still had the manual entries for username and password in about:config) -- although attempting to log out gives me a JavaScript Application error: "There was an error signing out." And it still neither logs me in nor out, even if I reset or clear those manual entries before I try.
-
Inappropriate? What version of TwitKit are you using on the machine?
-
Inappropriate?1.0, the version that's available from Firefox Add-ons as experimental. I have the same version on all three of my machines.
It works fine at home, on Kubuntu Gutsy with Firefox 2.0.0.15; I never had the least problem with that one.
But it doesn't work at my office, either on Win2K with Firefox 2.0.0.15, or on WinXP with Firefox 3.0. That's why I was wondering about it using the proxy versus a direct connection, because as far as I can tell, it's just plain not reaching the outside world from here.
