Status area when updating
1. Click refresh icon
2. UPDATING message cuts off top of most recent message
Why do this? Better to have a dedicated status area that doesn't interfere with reading messages while updating

Inappropriate?By intoducing a hidden notification area I'm trying to keep the interface simple. Still it's not the first time I'm getting this request.
Would you find it more pleasing if a panel appeared in such a way that it temporarily displaces the messages by pushing them down ? Would you prefer it if the notifications were simply moved at the bottom of the message list ? How do you picture this in your mind ? -
Inappropriate?I agree with the OP on this one.
Instead of pushing the msgs down to fix it, I think it would be nice if the updating msg was placed in the black bar at the top. Maybe to the left of the settings icon? -
Inappropriate? Also, just wanted to mention, if you switch from "friends" to "direct" while it's updating, the status message is lost.
-
Inappropriate? The notifications are independent for each message thread. These are actually separate lists, so if 'Friends' is updating and you're watching 'Directs' you don't have to be bothered.
How did this make you feel ? Was it annoying or did you just think it would make it's behavior perfect if I changed it ? I'm very interested in this kind of feedback.
You would you rather have the notifications at the bottom for example ? Or maybe put some transparency to it ? -
Inappropriate?I'd prefer to have a general notification of updating in the top bar, and have all three lists update at the same time (even if it's separate API calls -- I'm not familiar with the Twitter API sorry).
I don't think having the update notification at the bottom is very noticeable. That's why I kinda liked the idea of putting an icon in the top bar. -
Inappropriate? So an Icon that changed it's appearance depending on status (cycle for updating and exclamation for errors) and showed a message on hover ? Would that cut it ?
-
Inappropriate? Here's a good example of what I imagine... on the iPhone, when it's doing any kind of data loading in an app, it places the little Apple-twirley-waiting icon next to the "3G" or "E" icon. The icon isn't there when no background work is going on though.
I'm not sure a message on hover is necessary. -
Inappropriate? How about the button that you press to update - have that be the "throbber" style status icon while it's updating?
Otherwise, I'd vote for an icon that appears in the top toolbar, but goes away when idle.
I’m slightly annoyed

Inappropriate? In R104 I brought in an ajax-loader style refresh. Let me know what you think.
The aliasing on the edges of the image are a known issue, I'm working to fix it completely.
