Hey Twitter folks,
I was having trouble posting to Twitter via IM (probably associated with connecting to multiple jabber accounts subscribed to
twitter@twitter.com). Following the "nuke and start over" advice as per
http://twitter.com/twitter_status/sta..., I re-added my jabber account, and carefully made sure that the twitter bot was only present in that single account's buddy list.
The twitter bot showed as being online. I entered the verification code, and got back an error asking to enter my Twitter account's username. I did so, and all seemed right....until my friends started asking me "do you have a second twitter account?" What the?...
After a little investigation and comparing-of-timestamps, it looks like the attempt to authenticate my IM spawned the creepy stalker-like user "matro2" which then started friending all of the same people my normal account follows (my normal twitter handle is "matro").
Pages of note:
*
http://twitter.com/matro
*
http://twitter.com/matro2
Also note that the single post by "matro2" consists of the code that should have authenticated my IM account.
SO: Somehow, the act of sending that text string (and providing my username when prompted) spawned a second Twitter account, rather than authenticating an "IM device" to my existing Twitter account.

Update (+8hrs): the original single post (containing the auth code) at
http://twitter.com/matro2 has since disappeared. The account itself remains alive and following my friends, however.
