We restarted a database that normally restarts very quickly without resulting in any site degradation. Tonight, it's taking a long time to restart which is causing intermittent 500 errors for some web visitors. We're bringing it up to speed now.

500 Internal Server Error
I don't know if it affects all pages, but I experienced the problem with these pages just now:
One refresh of the browser is usually enough to fix it, but there are a few cases where I have to refresh four or five times before the site loads correctly. -
Inappropriate?I've got it on the site and via API (via Twitterific).

Oh if I only had a mac. :/ -

Inappropriate?help.twitter.com is also completely down:
"Cannot connect to database. Check your config.php file."
had to get here by going directly to getsatisfaction

Keep refreshing and trying different parts of the site. Maybe its a problem with load balancing? -
Inappropriate?same here, my scripts are having problems with the internal server errors...
I’m very sad
-
Inappropriate?seem to be having the same problem - have tried to refresh 3 or 4 times and sometimes get lucky with seeing the page. i can't post any updates though nor can i log in with any client
I’m twitchy
-
Can you post updates with your phone or IM? I think the web side might be the only thing with a problem? -
yeah, i seem to be able to post via IM. but neither twhirl nor witty nor alert thing are working... haven't tried via txt. -
I'm randomly getting into the site. Hope to see an official answer soon... -
Inappropriate?From @twitter_status:
twitter_status: We lost a database server, which is causing lots of errors. Reloading the page may work. It's in the process of recovery.

Inappropriate?I get the 500 internal server error. I can't post from web side. I could post from twitterfox. Most of the time a refresh or two gave me the page back but I also had to close and reopen a new page to make it work.
I’m frustrated

Thanks for the update! Patience on this end. -
Thanks for the update! -
As a fellow system admin, I have to ask the question, but do you have failover hardware to move the database to? According to the @twitter_status tweet, you lost a DB server. While I completely understand that switching to failover hardware does take time, I'm just curious as to whether you do have it, or you are just trying to reconfigure the DB server cluster to work without it for the time being? -
Inappropriate?any new news on the database issue, is there an estimate of how long its going to take for the systems to settle back down
I’m happy its not me having to fix the problem
-
Inappropriate?Same problem still occurring here now - 7:13 GMT

Inappropriate?@twitter_status:
The database is back up. We're checking to make sure everything is humming along -- but it looks good.
And also:
The database is up, but still having problems. We're working on that right now.
