@replies from people I don't follow and don't follow me
I've been getting replies from people I don't follow and they don't follow me either.
I use Twitterific and found that the API call to replies.format does in fact include the reply - so I know it's not the app pulling it from the public timeline.
The replies also appear on my 'replies' page on twitter.com - but since we're not following each other, in some cases I can't see the original message they posted (though the text appears fine in the API call).
Does this also open the door to potential spam, for example - this guy: http://twitter.com/waydbot - is pulling names from the public timeline and replying to them. This could easily be used to push unwanted adverts/spam to users - and with apps like Twitterific, it makes for a very invasive form of spamming.
Is this a real bug, and is it something that's planned to be fix?
Many thanks for a great app.
Remy.

Inappropriate?Hi Remy.
The official word from Twitter is that we shouldn't be seeing @replies from people that we're not following, precisely for the reason that you mentioned -- as a form of spam prevention.
Here are links to the official material:
1. Will I ever see replies from people I'm not following. @crystal posted an official response.
2. Twitter's FAQ page regarding @replies
Having said all that, you're not the only one who has seen @replies from people that you're not following. Other people have reported the same problem. See conversations in this related thread.
So it's either the FAQ is out of date, or we do have a bug. -
Inappropriate?I've just tried changing the reply settings in twitter, and refreshing the API feed response.
Now, either those settings make absolutely no difference the reply API (because the erroneous reply is still in the feed), or the feed is cached and refreshed on the server side at X frequency (I can understand the later being the case).
You're right, the FAQ states pretty clearly that you shouldn't receive replies if you're not following them (or visa versa) - so I think this one sounds like a bug. -
Inappropriate? In settings, there are 3 choices for @ replies: receive all @ replies, receive @replies to the people I'm following, or no @ replies
I also search for any other replies with tweetscan.com or terraminds.com. -
Inappropriate?Just posting a link to @ev's blogpost, which says that the Replies Tab will now show all @replies to you.
Relevant excerpt:
@Replies To You
If someone @replies you — note, this means they start a tweet with @yourusername — you will see that in your main timeline if you follow the person. But you'll see it in your replies tab, whether you follow them or not (unless you've blocked them)
I’m in a good mood

Inappropriate? This still seems to leave the door wide open for spam. If I don't follow someone, and I've selected to only see replies from those whom I follow - because of the last point: "But you'll see it in your replies tab, whether you follow them or not" - all the twitter apps that run on the desktop will invasively push these uninvited messages to us (because the replies feed acts the same way as the replies tab).
I’m worried spam is an issue.
-
Yes, the only recourse that is open to us is to block those users so their @replies to us do not appear in our Replies Tab. -
Inappropriate?I'm seeing this now as well. Could it be that twitterific is the culprit?
I’m seriously annoyed

Inappropriate?I figured it out. I had my twitter feed being pumped to friendfeed and didn't realize it. the commenter was from ff
I’m satisfied

Wow. I would never have been able to figure that out.
