Are you thinking more about your company or your service?
Not intended as an insult.
Ask for help ASAP or the service is going to drown in all the competition.
It's simple, really - send out a press release which tells the truth. You need help. I'm sure many people that enjoy what makes Twitter different from the competition would be willing to help. Ask for volunteers - if you feel you must offer them some sort of gratuity, figure out what it is you can offer and offer it. (I'm pretty sure there are a slew of people willing to help free of charge though.)
This is getting ridiculous, and I very much want to see Twitter survive.
Thanks,
@trench

Inappropriate?Hello. I believe Twitter has been actively hiring.
From a recent blogpost on their Developer blog:
... why don't we have "an army of geniuses working day and night". We'd love to, but it's easier said than done.
We interview constantly and have a talented recruiter bringing us exceptional candidates daily. We're careful about who we hire, though, because we're trying to build a great team in a sustainable way.
We're currently exploring supplementing our team with consultants, and we've accepted strategic help from outside organizations who actually do have armies of geniuses. If you'd like to lend your genius to our particular problems, have a look at our jobs page. -
Inappropriate?Eh, problem is... the job page suggests they only need 3 people. Or, rather, they think they only need 3 people. Unless I'm missing something.
In theory, I would say that's a plausible scenario.
3 people...
... methinks, though, that's simply insane.
For a site/service that's been touted "the new facebook", "web 3.0", and many other groundbreaking webisms (which may, or may not, be relevant)... they really seem to be suggesting - from the quoted text you provided - that they do indeed care more about their company than their service.
Stop worrying about "buying" a triad of saviors, and start worrying about building a semi-quasi collective of demi-saviors.
Jesus, this is the perfect example of why "old-world" business models are pure fail and open-source collaboration will eventually trump everything in its path.

Inappropriate?I can't speak for them, obviously. But if I were in their shoes, I wouldn't hire a lot of new people all at once also, as it would be counter-productive.
From your reply above, I get the impression that what you'd like them to do is to open-source everything?
P.S. the quoted text above was a direct response to a question that someone asked them about their staffing. So I think it's understandable why their answer talks more about the company and not about their service or their users.
