I just don't want certain people to have access to my Twitter updates.

Yes, you can block people.
Blocking will remove a follower from your timeline, and you from theirs. Here's how:
1. Log in to Twitter.
2. Go to the profile page of the person you wish to block.
3. Click Block (at bottom right, in the sidebar.)
4. Click OKAY to confirm the block
Once you block someone, you will not appear on the person's profile page, nor will they appear on yours. They will not be notified, and will be unable to send you friend requests in the future.
You can unblock a person by clicking "unblock" from their profile page.
Note: if your profile is public, they will still be able to go to your profile page and view your public updates. However, blocked parties cannot receive your updates on phone or IM. You can always protect your profile for the utmost privacy.

Inappropriate? If you block someone will you receive their updates from the 'track' feature?
-
Inappropriate?where can you see your block list?
-
Inappropriate?As of early May 2008:
1. You still receive Track alerts containing tweets from people you've blocked if they use a keyword that you're tracking. However, Twitter has also said that Track will be updated to respect Blocks.
Relevant excerpts:
"There are areas where we can improve our tools. For example, the track feature does not currently obey the block list, but it should." - goldtoe
"We consider this a bug not a feature. It is our intention to change the track behavior such that it respects the block list. I don't have a specific timeline for implementation; it's not an easy change, technically. But if we could will it to be so, track would respect the block list." - goldtoe
2. There is currently no way to see a list of people that you've blocked. There is, however, a thread here in GSFN where others have requested this capability.
