The Indian short code is active for certain carriers only; we're still working with many carriers in India to get Twitter fully supported. Until your carrier is supported, you may be unable to use the short code. We're currently supporting the following carriers:
Idea
BSNL North
BSNL South
BSNL East
Vodafone Essar (Hutch)
As we add more carriers, I will post them here. In the meantime, you can always use our international number, +44 762 4801423, or m.twitter.com, to get your Twitter updates.
If you're using one of our supported carriers and still having problems, send us an email with the following details:
1. Country, city
2. Mobile Number
3. Mobile Operator/Carrier
4. Date/Timestamp of last message sent to Twitter
(if you don't have one, send HELP to 5566511, and send us the time stamp information from the attempted message.)
Thanks for your patience guys, we're really looking forward to a fully functional number for India!

Bearing in mind that this reply was posted 5 months ago, is it still current? None of our friends and relatives in India (West Bengal), including those with BSNL or Vodafone Essar, have been able to use the short code, other than to receive SMS. The short code also appears to be a premium rate number - is it still cheaper to send text messages to that than to Twitter's international number?
Isn't it possible to have a normal Indian number as an alternative (as seems to be offered by www.vakow.com/twitter listed by rg in his reply)? Finally, Twitter currently automatically encourages everyone registering an Indian mobile phone to use the 5566511 short code, even though it may not work for their mobile number. Shouldn't Twitter provide the usual international number rather than the short code to those users whose mobile numbers aren't attached to the listed carriers on a plan on which it works? -
Inappropriate?Just F.Y.I. I'm on BPL Mobile in Mumbai and I keep getting an "incorrect number" message everytime I try to send that number a message. However, I've been receiving messages from that number just fine.

Inappropriate? We've recently made some changes that should have helped for users in India. If you're still having problems please check Crystal's note and let us know.

Inappropriate? Can I simply send updates to 5566511 with out modifying my setting?
I'm living in Spain, but I'm traveling to India in a few days.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Hey. Is this number based in India? If so then I can use it without fear :)
I’m curious
-
Inappropriate? But what e-mail address do I send that information to? (I used Vodafone Essar, but no joy with 5566511.)
-
Inappropriate?Apparently, the shortcode works with Airtel's Postpaid but not Prepaid connections.
I’m thankful
-
I'm an Airtel Prepaid subscriber from Delhi. Weeks ago I could use twitter from mobile using the short code but its not taking it now. I tried registering again but it won't take. Tried with Vodafone and Reliance prepaid too. It gives an error message saying "This service is not enables yet." -
Inappropriate?I'm on Airtel prepaid in Kolkata, West Bengal and the code is not working for me.
I know it's supposed to be coming soon but how soon is soon? I really need this urgently. Twitter is pretty much useless without the SMS feature. :(
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?@aryayush
Well, I feel having GPRS on the phone is much better and easier and cheaper than SMS for us Indians.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?I'm on Airtel prepaid, Tamilnadu network, India. Twitter messages through SMS was working fine a couple of weeks back. Now I'm neither able to get updates nor am I able to send messages through SMS. I get charged for each message and get this reply from 5566511. "This information is not available at the moment. Please try after sometime.". I've unregistered and re-registered my mobile and I am not even able to send the confirmation code to 5566511... :(
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?Harish, yes you will be charged for that number, depending on your rate plan. Regarding the problem, have you tried contacting your customer care ?
I am still able to use these services on a Postpaid connection from Mumbai circle.
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Could someone who is able to message please clarify if it is charged at the rate of an STD (inter-State) message or of a local message? And, as of today, messaging to 5566511 from a Vodafone-Essar (prepaid, Karnataka circle) phone is still not working. I can receive messages from that number, though.
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?Preshit,
I just contacted my customer care and their response was this - "This is not an Airtel service and so we cannot do anything."
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Point is, it's easier if you have GPRS, as Preshit said. Also if your phone has an in-built email service, you could use http://twittermail.com {Twittermail}
Although I use the shortcode for receiving notifications {On BSNL postpaid}. Simpler and easier. I hope they increase the carriers. It'd be really cool with all my friends in it :P
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate? When will the service be available for BSNL West?
-
Inappropriate?I contacted Airtel support, and this is what they have to say. The sms passes thru their gateway, and then we get charged Rs 3 for it. it then goes to the 5566511 server. After that, it's upto that server to respond. Via Airtel Tamil nadu postpaid, I could access this service for some time, and then it stopped. Airtel Delhi can still access this. Crystal - pls enable tweets for Airtel India...
I’m humbly begging
-
Inappropriate?Hi,
I am on the Vodafone Essar (Hutch) network in Chennai. I am not able to send any messages either.
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Hi,
We have just starting allowing posting to twitter via our 10 digit non-premium number in India.
It's cheaper than posting to a shortcode (regular SMS cost apply) and works on all mobile operators in India.
Please visit:
http://www.vakow.com/twitter/
You can complete your twitter registration by sending the confirmation SMS to their international number (one time) and then connect you account with Vakow! to post.
Please do send feedback at twitter@vakow.com
cheers

Inappropriate?Do i need to pay for recieving twitter messages on my mobile phone ?? I am from india...
-
No you don't. Receiving the SMS is not charged. However, twitter only lets you receive 250 SMSs per month. -
Do you currently pay (if you're not on roaming)? No (it's against TRAI guidelines). So, receiving messages from Twitter doesn't cost either. -
Inappropriate?I am using Vodafone (Hutch) and still I am not able to send SMS it says "Message sending failed."
I’m sad
-
Hi Santosh,
Here's what you can do:
1. Confirm your device using twitter's international number (hopefully you'll start receiving smses)
2. Connect your twitter account with vakow account (to post via vakow's number) -
Inappropriate?Doesn't work on:
Shortcode:5566511
Network: MTNL Mumbai
User: rohandhruva
Number: +919869310141
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? As on July 2009, Twitter'a India shortcode doesnt work :

Inappropriate?I have been using twitter for more than 2 years now , This problem has been there from the start , sometimes it will work for a week then it goes off for 2 3 months , it has never been stable, thats the reason i moved to jaiku , but now jaiku is also down I have no option , sticking with twitter , using mobile apps and desktop apps for updates, but it will be cool if this service gets active again , its easy for non techey guys to follow us ,I am using Airtel prepaid in Hyderabad now , a year back Airtel in mumbai.
oh ya I have tried setting this things using the Indian code as well the international number , nothing works now , I have wasted lot money just for setting it up . hope twitter puts a warning or a info page saying this service is down in India. At least we wont waste our money.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Try using Airtel, if you are from India. http://www.headlinesindia.com/lifesty...
