Can't register my Gtalk IM account with Twitter
When clicking on the 'click to verify your account' in the Phone and IM menu I get the following error:
"Firefox doesn't know how to open thiw address, because the protocol (xmpp) isn't associated with any program"
I then followed the instructions by adding twitter@twitter.com to my GTalk buddy list and sent the string of characters. Twitter didn't respond to these.
Can anyone advise what I am doind wrong?

Inappropriate?I wonder if this problem is because I use my own domain on Google and GTalk?
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem. IT IS, because you use your own domain. I ́ve set up an account thru regular gtalk-gmail and it works, but the other one, with my own domain doesn ́t
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?Just to clarify that my problem appears to be that the twitter account never accepts my invitation. So, I cannot actually send the code.
Maybe an approach might be to get a button to allow users to elect to have the twitter account send out a chat to the users account and then the user responds with the verification code?!? -
Inappropriate? How can we get "gtalk" with IM names different to "@gmail.com" ????????????????????????????????????????
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? If you sign up for the Google hosted apps for your domain, one of the apps that Google provides is Gtalk. You also get Google Docs, Google Web pages, Calendar and mail.
It would be nice if they provided greader as well ;)
I’m indifferent
-
They have an RSS reader... is that what you mean... not quite as fun as the rss feeds on the iGoogle page... well before they broke iGoogle for Safari 1.2 :-( -
Inappropriate? In fact, I am using gtalk with "google apps for your domain", the problem is that my gtalk account is not recognized by twitter.
Dont know what "greader" is. If is a short for "google reader", I have suscribed it with my email account also.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I have a similar problem, I keep trying to get tweets to my IM (gtalk) and it will not register. I get to where I am supposed to send the code the twitter@twitter.com and it shows that contact as offline. Funny thing is, it worked up until about Aug 30. I tried emailing the code to that account from gmail, no luck. I am using gtalk for my domean.
I’m frustrated as heck.....
-
Inappropriate?same problem. does not work nor as gtalk nor as jabber. very very very bad programmers.
-
Inappropriate? It worked for me up until August. Except for this I really like twitter.

Inappropriate? We have to add to DNS:

Inappropriate? My records are already like that. I just tried another gmail address, still no luck.
-
Inappropriate? Can you explain the DNS issue ? Thanks
As you can see, I've tried as jabber, but if you 've got a special configuration for Jabber, I'll try.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?I re registered with a standard gmail account. I did change my DNS records to be sure (as I said, it worked up until August) but to no avail.
-
Inappropriate?ok-ok
i just setup as said in http://www.kavinda.net/2007/07/31/How...
point IM as jabber and all work fine
-
Inappropriate?_xmpp-client _tcp @ 5 0 5222 talk.l.google.com 1 Hour
_xmpp-server _tcp @ 5 0 5269 xmpp-server.l.google.com 1 Hour
_jabber _tcp @ 5 0 5269 xmpp-server.l.google.com 1 Hour -
Inappropriate?I'm understanding that we need to "add to DNS". My question is HOW? I tried following instructions on the kavinda.net site, but it wasn't working. Where am I typing those lines and how do I know they are being entered in my dns? That's what's confusing me. I think I know WHAT to type, but not WHERE to type it!
-
Inappropriate?ask your provider. i did it by myself on godaddy.com who support my domain names
-
Inappropriate?SRV is special type of records of DNS (possibly your dns does not support this type of records -- upgrade or change server)
-
Inappropriate?I bought the domain on godaddy but it tells me that my dns is hosted somewhere else. when i go to cpanel for my host, i don't see anything about dns or srv. what should i be looking for?
-
Inappropriate?ok. there are three possibilty
1 -- support domain somwhere else -- in this case you should ask your hoster (who support your domains and whose name server)
2 -- park domain (only temporary decision %) no any administration)
3 -- host domains (only ns records i mean) here(godaddy) -- use TotalDNS (picture in Kavinda's blog explain exactly this situation)
generally you can move support of dns to godaddy
and add records for you site, mx (mail) and srv records. -
Inappropriate?Woohoo!! Yup this worked great. I have my GApps Gtalk client working directly with Twitter. Thanks very much for digging this out.
I’m very happy
-
Inappropriate?one minor change . . . not sure if it is important . . . is that the final period after the _xmpp-client entries is missing. I assumed that you needed it when I added those entries, but maybe you don't.
Cheers,
-Lyndon-
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?guys, it's working here, i added several SRV records to my domain.
Check out...
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?ke...
hope it helps!
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Hey Dave - I'm the exact same situation, my DNS records look bang on but it still doesn't work. Did you ever resolve this problem?
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?about two days ago, out of nowhere, it started working again, why, I have o idea...
-
Inappropriate? And for the less technical amongst us who don't want to go messing around with DNS. How do I get my GTalk account to register my jabber details (e.g. xxx@xmpp.com)
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? What exactly do you mean, phynbarr?
-
Inappropriate?I've given this CRAP up as a bad joke, we should NOT have to go typing in lines of code to try and get it working! Google and Twitter should get there arse into gear and set it up properly.
I’m PISSED OFF
-
Inappropriate?I've set up a Gtalk account and added in jabber account details. At this point Gtalk says it sends a verification email. Where? *.xmpp.org doesn't have naywhere I can pick up any email and respond to verify. All the responses I've seen here require amending DNS Servers etc.
Is there some way of managing this without having to go to this level of detail - I'm not very technical -
Inappropriate?Phynbarr, just send me a mail (usmc.mk@army.com)
-
Inappropriate?Simon, you are sure right! It's a shame that WE (the users) have to configure and configure just because some companies are not able to offer something that is EASY-TO-USE!
-
Inappropriate?I know it is frustrating. Perhaps when they are ready to charge for Twitter we can expect everything to work flawlessly, but I think it is worth recognizing that they are offering a free beta service.
-
Inappropriate?I cannot find a way to manage SRV records on Yahoo domains. Does anyone know if Yahoo allows management of SRV records? Can't find it on their help as well.
Thanks in advance.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I gave up trying to solve this. Too much trouble. So instead what I'm doing now is using twhirl to do all twitter, but am using gTalk for my non-gApp account (username @ gmail.com) and added twitter to it. Now I use the download gTalk for twitter, and gTalk web on gMail.
I’m meh
-
Inappropriate?I added twitter@twitter.com to my Buddy List, but it shows that contact as offline. I tried sending the code anyway, but it said < twitter@twitter.com > Your message could not be delivered: "Message", Reason: ""
I am using an account from GMail (@gmail.com) and not Google Apps.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Similar to Aijalyn here: added twitter@twitter.com to buddy list of desktop gtalk (I don't have Google Apps, so I don't know where that domain list lives that I could edit). When I enter the code twitter gives me, the reply from Gtalk is "twitter@twitter.com is offline and can't receive messages right now."
Feels like it could be a temporary problem on twitter.com's server's side, I'll wait for a bit unless someone's got a better idea.
Oh and Firefox doesn't know what an xmpp is, and I don't know what to say to it about that either.
I’m confused
-
IM-update does not work on twitter for some last weeks. They write: "We're working to restore IM services to all users. Thanks for your patience!" -
Inappropriate? When you have the "original" Gmail (@gmail.com or @googlemail.com) you can't do anything but waiting. If there is a problem it's up to Twitter or Google...
-
Thanks nandayo! That's indeed the case here, I should have mentioned that in my original reply. Cf. Denis's comment the problem is wholly on twitter's side, and waiting it out is what I'll do. -
Inappropriate?ok, it looks like my problem is a little different than everyone elses...
I have Windows XP SP3, Firefox 3 RC1, and Gtalk Labs Edition. I DO NOT have a google for your domain or whatever it is. just normal gtalk. I'm trying to be very specific and put in all the details, so sorry if i'm redundant or boring or whatever.
After i put in my username, i click on the link it says to and i get the message that firefox doesnt know what to do with it. so i invite twitter through gtalk, it says the invite was successful, but twitter does not show up on my buddy list. then i get an email for the mail delivery subsystem that says delivery failed permanently. I have tried both in gtalk and gmail chat. it looks to me like since the address is twitter@twitter.com and not just twitter, it tries to send it an (email) invite instead of adding it to my buddy list. -
Ah, I think I know what you mean, Zeppelin. Well Google is sending out emails! to the Jabber network (Why.. I haven't found out yet lol) to invite people to their great service... Well, Jabber@jabber.org should be on your list anyways, but probably in a "waiting status". Just write a message with your private keyword to that address via Google Talk.
The link will look like xmpp:twitter@twitter.com?message;body=XXXXX just write the XXX keyword in your message... and when you have luck and Twitter is up lol it will maybe work ;) -
SORRYYYY what a typing boo boo :| of course i meant twitter@twitter.com -
Inappropriate?i do not have, never have had, and have nver heard of having jabber@jabber.org on my buddy list. i added it, but it didn't show up. no delivery failure email, though.
-
Twitter IM is still just down for everyone.
See here: http://getsatisfaction.com/twitter/to...
Twitter blog says they hope to have it fixed tomorrow (Tuesday) -
Inappropriate? For now, adding twiter to gTalk won't work. Twitter turned it off on May 28:
http://status.twitter.com/post/364016...
On June 2 they said it's their next priority to fix: http://status.twitter.com/post/369546...
-
Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem AND I use standard GTalk. I added twitter@twitter.com (on both my GTalk and Jabber accounts) and I get no response.
I’m Aggravated
-
Inappropriate?Hi Rushowr. Yes, Twitter IM has been offline since May 23, so attempts to verify your IM settings right now will fail.
We can follow this related thread for updates, or you can also visit the Twitter Status blog for news as to when im will be back up. -
Inappropriate?Man, I have spent three hours trying to figure this out because I really wanted to use gtalk instead of sms. After all that time googling around I finally read that they are disabled. It would sure be nice if they would put a little note on the add devices page saying that it doesn't work. That would have saved me A LOT of time.
1 person says
this solves the problem
-
I can confirm this. They've been having serious problems with IM support and actively disabled that API. I only found out recently myself. As you say, a little up front warning would have been nice. -
Inappropriate? From what I can tell, people who already had IM enabled before it went offline on May 23 (like me) see a notice on their sidebars that that IM is currently offline.
However, people who don't have IM enabled do not see anything in their sidebars. So folks who are only just now trying to add IM do not see the notice.
Putting a note on the http://twitter.com/devices page is a great idea. -
Inappropriate?Grrrr...do domain, simple blogger and can't get darned thing to work. The reason i effed-off in the first place.
I’m bloody frustrated
