Can't save settings: "Screen name has already been taken"
Seems like this is a very old issue. And I can't see anywhere that it's actually been solved.
So here's my situation.
I recently acquired @neville, a Twitter account in my own name, one that somebody else had registered nearly 2 years ago but had done nothing with. Twitter agreed I could have it.
Great. But, whenever I try and change any setting, I get this error -
"Screen name has already been taken."
and no change can be saved. I could upload a new avatar but I guess that doesn't count as a change. So, for instance, I can't change the background: when I try and then click 'save', I get that error message and the change isn't saved.
I also added my mobile phone number; sent the verification code by SMS to the UK number Twitter proposed. I was expecting an SMS reponse to confirm but I didn't hear anything. So I sent a tweet by SMS to see what happened. It was published.
I'm directly logged in to the account and can write and post tweets. Weird.
Can anyone help me resolve this? Thanks.

Inappropriate?Hello Twitter. Anyone there?
Would love to hear from someone, please! Thank you.
I’m glad it's Friday :)

Inappropriate?Hi Neville. Sounds like your problem requires the assistance of Twitter Support. I therefore suggest you log a support ticket at http://help.twitter.com/portal, which is the recently launched Support system.
Look for the "Submit a Request to the Help Desk" tab along the upper left area of the page.
You'll need to login with a Twitter account (I suggest you log in using the account that has the problem)
This forum (GetSatisfaction.com) is more for users helping each other out. -
Inappropriate?Hi Neville,
This sometimes happens when your mobile phone creates an account. Try entering your phone number here:
http://twitter.com/account/complete
You may be able to find the duplicate account. If not, please submit a support ticket if you haven't already-- just log in and click 'help' in Twitter's upper navigation bar. If that doesn't work, you can always send an email to support@twitter.com directly; just be sure to include your user name, phone number, and email address associated with your account.
Thanks!
Crystal
