Can't turn on individual friend updates. Phone is activated, Device Updates set to ON.
I am not receiving SMS updates from my friends.
* My phone number has been verified and I can tweet from my phone
* On my home page under Device Updates, I've selected the radio button next to "phone"
* Under Settings -> Device Updates, I have Device Updates set to "on"
* I have texted "on" to 40404 and received a confirmation that updates are on
When I go to my friends' pages, however, and look under their name, "Following" is checked but it says "- Device updates OFF". I clicked that to bring up the menu to change it, but the radio button is set to OFF, both radio buttons are grayed out so that I cannot select ON, and it says: "Receive jpkeith's updates via SMS or IM (activate)." With a link to activate, which brings me back to Settings -> Device, where my phone number is listed and Device Updates are turned ON. The box next to Sleep is not checked.
I've even tried "Delete and start over?" and re-activated my phone but that did not help.
I've done as much troubleshooting as I can think of. The issue appears to be that although my device updates are on, they are turned off individually for each friend. Why am I unable to turn device updates on for my friends?

Hi guys,
This is a bug. I've verified that this is happening on various accounts, and we're looking into it.
In the meantime, you should be able to to turn notifications on and off for people using SMS/text commands. Try sending these commands to 40404, or 21212:
* ON (to make sure your device notifications are on)
* follow username (to start getting someone's updates on your phone)
* leave username (to stop getting someone's updates on your phone)
You can also use on/off user name in place of follow/leave:
* on username (to start getting someone's updates on your phone)
* off username (to stop getting someone's updates on your phone)
There are more commands here:
http://getsatisfaction.com/twitter/to...?
Please try sending those commands to 40404 and let me know:
1. if you start receiving SMS/text updates after sending on/follow user name
2. if the profile page of the person accurately reflects a change
3. your user name
4. which browser you're using
Thanks,
Crystal

Inappropriate?I can see nothing you've missed or done incorrectly.
I can confirm the current behaviour of the radio buttons for Device updates OFF and Device updates ON, and the behaviour of the Receive friend's updates via SMS or IM (activate) link.
In the days when things were working, I set Device updates ON for a few friends; for most other people I follow, I left the default setting Device updates OFF.
In no case can I now toggle any of these settings.
This is admittedly rather academic in my case, since I live in Germany and relied on Twitter's international number, which ceased to deliver SMS on 13th. August 2008.
Probably for that reason, Settings -> Device displays my (correct) phone number - but with Delete and start over? as my sole option.
I’m puzzled because you've done everything right.
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem. I submitted a ticket to Twitter three days ago and have had no response. If I hear something I'll let you know.
I’m Aggravated
-
You might consider updating your support ticket with a link to this thread, so that Twitter know you're not alone in experiencing this problem. "8 people have this question" as I write this. BTW a delay of several days before Twitter responds is not unusual: Twitter apparently process support tickets sequentially, and usually have quite a backlog. -
Inappropriate?I just joined and I thought it was something I was doing wrong, but apparently not. I really would like some help from Twitter.
I’m sad I can't follow friends.
-
Inappropriate?I also had this question. Fortunately, the problem cleared up the next day for me. I'm receiving updates now.
-
Inappropriate?Im having the same problem.
-
Inappropriate?Just to chime in here: I, too, am having this problem -- all the standard support suggestions followed (device added and activated, sent a superfluous 'ON' text, etc) but the "On" and "Off" radio buttons are still non-selectable and defaulted to "Off" for friends. Boo.
-
Inappropriate?i am having the same problem. i have been working on it for about 2 hours. nothing. i don't know whats going on. my friends checked their accounts, which were made months ago, and they have no problems. i suppose the problem is with new accounts. but maybe not. either way, this needs to be resolved fast. please.
I’m done

Inappropriate?cameroncovello:
My account is about 4 1/2 months old, and I could toggle Device updates ON and OFF whenever I needed to.
But I haven't bothered with this since 13th. August 2008, when Twitter's international number ceased to deliver SMS, since I live in Germany and knew I wouldn't receive any device updates any more, whatever I tried.
However, I did try toggling Device updates over the past few days to confirm Katie Alice's observations, as I mentioned above.
Do users of "older" accounts in Canada, India or the USA experience the problem Katie Alice and others describe in this thread?
I’m hoping Twitter will soon notice that 12 users have already reported this problem.
-
Inappropriate? One possible workaround: I found that when I sent a follow SMS (texted 'Follow <friend>was able to receive device updates for that friend. However, when I went to her page, the "Off" and "On" radio buttons were again grayed out, except that "On" was now defaulted.
I’m indifferent
-
I don't even need SMS to achieve this. Tweeting on friend or off friend from my What are you doing? box at http://twitter.com/home toggles the radio buttons (an academic exercise in my case, as already described) - but they remain grayed out. -
Inappropriate?Original poster here - I don't know what y'all did to fix it, but it appears to be working just fine now. I've just gone through and set all my friends to "Device Updates ON". I'll just have to wait and see if I get a text message the next time someone updates. *fingers crossed*
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?hoopdriver:
Here's the workaround.
If you're in Canada, India or the USA, tweeting on friend or off friend (by whatever means you choose) will switch text updates on or off for that friend.
If you don't live in one of those three countries, you won't receive Twitter SMS texts whatever you do.
I’m telling it like it is.

Note that this works when you tweet on (etc.) from your normal What are you doing? tweet box at http://twitter.com/home on the Web too. -
Inappropriate?I have the same problem... i set my sisters up for an account and both of theirs cannot set up individual device updates... it's all grayed out... I will have them try the "on username" thing and see if that works!
I’m frustrated
-
Ok, so the "On username" thing works... but it's still annoying that I can't do it from the web! So, at best, it's a temporary work-around until they fix the thing. -
It's been resolved for me now! I'm an American user... not international. Yay! -
K82: Did you try the workaround I mentioned 2 posts above this one? -
yes I did, still doesn't change the fact it can't be done via web. sometimes my phone isn't on me and I can't edit it on the fly while on the website. -
Via web I just tweet (e.g.) on K82 from the next best What are you doing? box. If necessary, I open a new browser tab set to http://twitter.com/home. It works for me, though that may not be universal. I'd still like to be able to use the mouse on the radio buttons, though! -
Inappropriate?I can confirm that I experience this behavior too.
I've tried three different browsers: Chrome, Firefox 2.0.0.16, and IE 7 (all on Win Vista). The behavior is the same on all three.
1. When I view my Friends list at http://twitter.com/friends, I no longer have the option to change notification settings for each friend (this used to be available)
2. When I'm viewing a particular friend's profile, I can click the [Following] button and it opens up the panel to show if I have device settings ON or OFF. However, I cannot change the "Device updates" setting by clicking.
3. When I look at my phone settings at http://twitter.com/devices, my phone number is still verified, and I can see my phone number displayed. However, I no longer see the other phone options: Sleep Time, PIN, and whether device notifications are On, Off, or Direct Messages only. The only thing I can do is click the [Delete and start over] button.
Note: I'm what Twitter considers an "international" user -- meaning, I was using the +44 international number (not the US, Canada, or India shortcodes). I wonder if this problem only affects international users.

Yes I now am getting the updates and their page does reflect the change.
My username is K82 and I'm using firefox 2.0.0.16/2.0.0.17 on two different machines. -
Inappropriate? When I sent the message "* ON" to 40404, I got an odd text message back that said, "You have mad On's latest update a favorite."
When I sent the text message "ON" to 40404, then I received a confirmation message letting me know that my updates are on.
(Being new, it wasn't immediately clear to me whether or not I should be entering the asterisk into my message before the word, "ON" - maybe better to leave out the asterisk and just put quotes around whatever text should be sent. )
----
I then sent the text message "follow test_gerald" to 40404 and it worked. I tried a test post from my test account and got the SMS/text message on my cell phone. First time in 4 hours - which is great. Thanks!! That was extremely frustrating (not putting the work-around into place, just the 4 hours previous to that)
I checked the test account profile and - where I hadn't previously been able to turn Device Updates on - this time I was successful, meaning the users profile correctly reflects the change.
----
my user name is gerald10
----
I'm using Firefox 3.0.3.
Here's the exact info in the "about" section of my browser:
"Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092417 Firefox/3.0.3"
----
Thanks again for posting the work around. Your posting was extremely helpful.
This was an extremely frustrating first experience using Twitter. Your software is really buggy but your customer service is first rate. Within maybe 10 minutes of my posting my problem to your support site, someone emailed me back and directed me to your post.
thanks a lot,
Gerald

The (undocumented?) command * username has the same effect as fav username, and marks (stars) username's most recent tweet as a favourite.
So * ON marked ON's most recent tweet as a favourite (assuming there actually is a user named ON). -
Inappropriate?Hello! I'm currently looking into this bug. I can't, as of right now, find any reproducible instances of this, and anyone affected should be fixed within 12 hours of the problem.
Please, if you see this happen to you, let us know so we can investigate!
Specifically, if you have your phone turned on and you go to a friends profile page and you DON'T see the "notifications on/off" message, let us know.
Thanks!

Hi Britt. My account which has this problem is http://twitter.com/mcdy (sorry for the confusion) -
Britt - I'm currently having this issue, and am a US user. I've got the workaround, where i can add people via my device, but the radio buttons to activate this through the website are blacked out. At this point, i'm happy i found this thread to learn the workaround! :) Thanks for your help! Let me know if you need more info to investigate! -
Jeff - The workaround works not just from your mobile device, but also from your normal website http://twitter.com/home . Just tweet on friend (etc.) from there too. -
Inappropriate?britt:
I see exactly what mdy describes above.
I'm an "international" user too (i.e. on Twitter's +44 international number - not Canada, India or USA) which may make me less interesting in this particular case.
I DO see the Device updates ON | OFF radio buttons: as described above, they just don't react to clicks.
I'm Eridanus on Twitter, using Windows XP (SP3) / Chrome / http://twitter.com .
I’m pleased you're investigating this bug.
-
Inappropriate? Here's what a profile page looks like when I view it while I'm logged into my http://twitter.com/mcdy account:
As Eridanus mentioned, the Device updates on/off radio buttons are visible, but they're grayed out and don't react to clicks. -
Thanks for the screenshot, mdy: that's exactly how it appears on my screen, too. -
Inappropriate?Please note that there's a workaround here.
-
Inappropriate?I am having this problem as well. Except that when I look at the list of people I'm following, I get no Off and On buttons at all..
This happen on Safari(Webkit)/OSX and Firefox 3.0.3 on a XP -
Inappropriate? The buttons disappeared for me (in Google Chrome) a few days ago, too (which may mean Twitter is trying out something new).
But the button-free workaround (above) still works.
I’m happy the workaround still works.
-
Inappropriate?I just signed up on Twitter and am having this same problem. I'm also using twitterberry. I get no sms or twitterberry updates and online the person's device update said off. Yes the "work around" does work but I too have no radio buttons at all below their name. While typing this I just received my first sms update ever but still no twitterberry update, using v .8. in the US
I’m wishing there was more HELP on the help screen since this has apparently been going on for months now.
-
Inappropriate?I was able to get updates started by using the SMS workaround. On the Twitter site, Device Updates now display as "ON" on my friends' pages. But I still don't see any radio buttons. The only way I found this solution was Googling "Device Updates Off", which lead me here. Considering how many Twitter users have had this problem and for how long, I am surprised and disappointed that Twitter has not addressed this issue more clearly somewhere within their own site's Help pages. Bad job, Twitter.
I’m frustrated and disappointed in Twitter
-
Inappropriate?I'm having the same issue here and am quite annoyed. Although, it is a free service so I can't complain too much :)
I’m concerned
-
Inappropriate?Problem was magically fixed for me a few days after filing support request with Twitter. I didn't receive a personalized reply; just started working.
I’m happy
-
Thanks! I'm giving that a whirl. -
Inappropriate?SMS workaround is the only thing that works. I still can't change anything via the website.
I’m annoyed.
-
Inappropriate?I'm having this problem and even the SMS work around isn't working so far.
I’m annoyed

Inappropriate?I too have been having this issue for several months. Does it magically get fixed by posting the issue here or is there another place this should be reported?
