Decrease in followers: suspended accounts removed from followers pages
Good news for people everywhere!
A long awaited bug fix is going out this week: suspended accounts are being removed from everyone's "followers" pages.
Expect to see an extreme drop in followers numbers in many cases, as we've suspended thousands of accounts for spam over the past few months. Your followers number will now accurately reflect the number of legitimate followers you have on Twitter.
Thanks to @stopthespam and everyone who has followed Twitter's @spam account and direct messaged us with names of spammers. With your help, we're making improvements toward keeping Twitter spam-free!

Inappropriate?Dang, now everyone will know that all my followers are just spam and I won't look cool anymore.
Keep up the good work. -
Inappropriate? Thanks! One thing to note: the bug is fixed but the removal of suspended profiles from followers pages will be gradual. In other words, suspended accounts wont vanish from everyone's followers page at the exact same time; this will happen to different people on different days.

Inappropriate?Nice, though painful to see 1 in 6 followers unfollow me in the space of 10 minutes.
That was right after a celebration tweet for reaching 300, something I've been working for for a long time. Little upset about that but... what can I do?
Little unlucky, but I guess it was for the best. :)
I’m without 50 followers.

Inappropriate?I'm glad to see this, I lost about 10% of my followers from two Twitter accounts, though one lost 58 followers and the other lost about 20 followers, and now I get to relive breaking the 500 follower barrier all over again! If you want to help, you can follow me @ianmayman and I may follow you back. :o)
I’m glad Twitter is making progress. Now, any chance of groups?!
-
Groups is something for the API to deal with, methinks. Our company's working on something like that, but I can't say much more than that. -
Inappropriate?Thanks!

Inappropriate?Number of followers isn't important. If it is for you, then you aren't really using Twitter right. Care more about the experiences, conversations, and information. I'm glad now i have a "true" count (@dimensionmedia). Everyone kinda knew they had spam accounts following them anyway, right? :-)
-
The number of followers isn't important to me, the conversation is and the more people (mutual following) in the conversation, the richer and more varied the conversation is. That's not to say I follow everyone back, only those that are relevant or reply at some time. I could have over 1000 followers easily if I was purely interested in more followers. -
Dimension, nobody joins Twitter to gain followers for the same reason MySpace users don't join solely to gain friends.
However, on Twitter, it's nice to see that people are interested in you (even in some kind of self-esteem restoring-ish way), and you do find that with more followers, you get a far better balanced discussion going with them. -
lawrence, i know plenty of (most non-professional) people that brag about their followers/friends on social networks. So your statement might only apply to those you happen to know and trust. It definitely happens though. The spam accounts should be a clear sign that some consider it important.
You are 100% right about the discussions though. That's why I'm also a big fan of Friendfeed. -
Inappropriate?Like like the concept but some of my best friends are spammers...lol....j/k
I feel its okay to discuss your line of work but if everything you post is link to your website, then I delete or don't follow those types....good job
I’m not a scrooge

Inappropriate?Hello Crystal -
I am glad too, but it looks like Twitter has flagged me as "antisocial" and suspended me. I'm not, I promise, but I imagine using the tool to auto-follow based on keywords of topics I am interested in was the driver.
I hope I can be reinstated, because I really like Twitter, and my apologies for any trouble.
My Twitter account is RickCogley, my ticket number from Twitter zendesk is #2965, and my request number is # 348444. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Rick Cogley
I’m anxious

Inappropriate?Crystal, as much as I appreciate the update, I cannot follow people back from my main account since this update under @nicolesimon - following just results in a small circle for 'waiting' and then nothing. Other accounts from this computer and in the same browser do not have the problem, this account with other browsers do have it.
I do tend to follow back most people, but I do check *every* single one of my followers bevor hitting follow - and while I see that some people are more MLM than others, I tend to follow them back if they talk about marketing and have good, dialogue oriented tweets.
I also do for example 'batchfollow' people from my german account on my english account because of an already established relationship in order to have everything also in my main twitter account.
Having written one of the first published books on twitter in German, I am likely to add a *lot* of new followers because I also conduct twitter lists on the book blog for the German twittersphere as well as for my followers.
Since this seems to be directly related to the update and there is no other indication on how to check for the 'status' of my account I'd like a reply from you or somebody else, thanks. -
Inappropriate?Hmm why dont you suspend people with 600.000 followers then?
How come if we get 2000 people we get suspended?
How come are more and more frustrated people on Twitter?
Why do you think I have a bad taste when I will ever hear of Twitter?
Why dont you work on TELLING PEOPLE why and when they are suspended?
Why dont you work on your "suspended account message" which has a broken link?
omg there are so many...
like:
How come I hear ONLY of bugs in Twitter?
There are more and more scams that PUSH you to brake the rules and twitter doesnt do anything.
How come you're always too busy to answer YOUR MEMBERS questions?
and there are so many many many more
Till then this posts are useless for anybody reading them.
I’m frustrated

Maybe you are of the mindset that expects problems with Twitter, I mean I never find a problem. I don't advertise anything or promote myself and I recommend and retweet others, maybe that is why I have twice as following me as I follow back and why I have new followers every time I check. Today I have been mentioned in tweets by several people each with over 20,000 followers. Someone with over 600,000 followers obviously provides a reason for so many people to follow them, do you? There should however be a reason for suspension, time constraints may mean this is only a box ticked by Twitter staff indicating which of the terms of service was broken. -
Inappropriate?Crystal, five months ago you say "suspended accounts are being removed from everyone's 'followers' pages". Recent checks of my followers on a number of accounts show this is not the case.
-
Inappropriate?I joined a system that teaches to join twitter cause we'll get followers that we follow back & we follow their followers if they interest us. You yourself even advertise that. You guys took 100 followers from me per day - 3 days in a row. The 4th day it was a cool 500. All lump sums. Just so theres no confusion thats a total of 800 in 4 days. To top that off this last time when you took the 500 - i had to unfollow all of them since i was right at 2000 & you stop us from following any more if our followers are not at the same amount. I had to reach that 2000 follower quota 3 times in 1 week so then you took big lum sum so i'd have even more difficulty. Your excuse of removing spammers dont cut it with me.Whats the real reason?
Also My understanding of spamming is when you send messages to people that dont know you or havent interacted with you. Now with the twitter system im not able to send a tweet or a direct message to anyone who havent asked for my follow or havent accepted my request for their follow. So how could anyone be spamming? Unless People are calling it spamming when you send them tweets that they dont like. Which there you say that no one will know when some one blocks thier messages. Thats just a flat out lie. When ive tried to send messages and they've got it blocked your system tells me so.(This Person Has Blocked Your Messages)
You need to stop all the back stabbing & steeling our followers.
Whats The Real Reason Your Taking Our Followers???
