Many people love Twitter but I'm sure there are a few that don't. Since Twitter is cusomizable to what tweets your receive and how you receive them it can be tailored to anyone's tastes. I would have to guess that most of the people that actively use Twitter now did not really know what to expect from the service but once they got involved, they realized the benefit and excitement of it.

Twitter isn't just a social networking tool either. There are actually many real-life uses of the service and the WikiPedia entry touches on that a little bit.

You really need to just start using the service and you need to have SMS messages enabled. Once you're following a few people that update regularly, you will not be able to help yourself in becoming a part of the community.
