Email my frustration

When I started up my account I entered .au after my hotmail email address and this is incorrect. Now I keep getting messages that twitter can't email me and to update my email address. however I can't i keep getting the field going pink saying I can't change this information, even after entering my password? Can anybody help or do I just delete the account and start again.
