Filtering Friends' Tweets On Twitter.com
I would love to have the option to create filters to control which friends' tweets I want to see on my main page.
It's possible to specify which friends' tweets we want to get on our cell phones, but we can't do this on the website, and there are times when it would come in handy.
For example, some of my friends go through spells where they get a severe case of Twitterrhea, posting every two seconds. It makes me crazy, but I don't want to unfollow them; it would just be nice if I could filter their posts temporarily during the periods when they're drowning all my other friends out.

Inappropriate?I'd like this, too.
As things are currently, I must unfollow users whom I otherwise find interesting when they suddenly overwhelm my timeline with ball-by-ball accounts from a big game, or when they list every speaker and new thought from a convention they're attending on a subject I neither understand nor really want to.
I'd prefer not to have to remember which users I've unfollowed in order to refollow them later.
It's particularly tricky if the person concerned has a protected account, because then I'd have to re-apply to get back in - and that might take a while, especially if they were offended by having been unfollowed.
My followers, too, should be able to suppress my tweets on days when I've a lot to say about something they find thoroughly boring.

Inappropriate?I have this problem, too, and would love to solve it without permanently unfollowing someone.
I totally agree with Violet and the other posters that this would be a very useful and welcome enhancement to Twitter, and I hope it will be added soon.

Inappropriate? In the months since I originally posted this suggestion here, someone developed an application that does exactly that! You can snooze chosen friends for a specified period of time without unfollowing them:

Handy!
It's not 100% perfect, in that the way it works is to temporarily UNFOLLOW the person and then it will automatically re-follow them when your desired snooze period is up. That means that they'll get another "so-and-so is now following you on Twitter" message for you and they'll know you weren't following them for a bit. (It can also let someone know you've snoozed them, if you choose, but most people probably wouldn't want to alert someone.)
That info (and more about the way it works) can be found under "The Details..." link.
