First time caller. What's "retweeting" mean?
Hey, Twitter,
I can't find out what "retweeting" is/does. A user asked me to resend a message out to everyone who follows her and I can figure out how to do this or if it has anything to do with retweeting. They might be two separate questions.
I don't get the whale and the birdies (oh, right "tweet"), but I love them, even when you're down.
Thanks!

Inappropriate?@Liz,
Retweeting is like forward-an-email. You 'forward' some one else's tweet by doing a retweet.
There are many clients out there and Twhirl is an example that has 'retweet' feature, http://www.twhirl.org/
Does this help?

Yes, it helps a lot, thanks Thomas! This is the only way that person A can send out person's B's tweet, right? I was asked to send a tweet to someone's followers and this is something the other person has to do by retweeting, right? I can't plug into someone else's network unless I add everyone to mine. Thanks again for taking time to answer. -
Inappropriate?Hi Liz,
You can always manually just type in "retweeting @Liz I am awesomre". There is no *official* way of retweeting, Twhirl is just one of many clients out there that does this.
As always, Twitter is nothing more than simple plain text, so you can send whatever you want.
happy twittering...

You mean I could do this to test retweeting? If I sent your message, it would go out to everyone who follows me, right? But there is no way I can send a message to someone else's followers without them retweeting my message, right? Thanks again for the explanation. I'm glad there is someone who checks the help page! -
Inappropriate?Hi Liz,
Q: If I sent your message, it would go out to everyone who follows me, right?
A: Yes.
Q: But there is no way I can send a message to someone else's followers without them retweeting my message, right?
A: Correct.
Think of it like email. You cannot send to my group-email-alias (similar to my followers), unless I explicitly forward your email to them all (thus the retweet). Not sure if that's a good example, but I hope it makes sense :)
Hee, feel free to ask for clarification if I'm still not clear. Oh and there are hundreds (if not more) people monitoring this forum, so you're in good hands.

No, that is very clear. I was asked to resend a message I sent to an individual to her network and I wasn't sure how to do that. Turns out it is not possible! Thanks again. -
Inappropriate?OK, I am still confused about this retweeting thing. I have only been twittering for about a week, and I have lots of people asking for a retweet.
Why? Exactly how do I do it? Uh! My brain hurts...
I’m amused

When someone asks you to re-tweet something, they're asking you to copy what they've just sent and post the same text as your own update.
Basically, you're being asked to forward the text along to your own followers.
You do it by copying the original tweet, pasting it into the "What are you doing?" box on your Twitter home page, and posting the update like any other update. -
Inappropriate?Pete:
Retweeting just means that you (manually or otherwise) copy a tweet (generally someone else's), perhaps insert the word Retweet at the beginning and even acknowledge the source (if there's room for all that), and send it from your own What are you doing? box. It's all highly informal. Example:
Retweeting: An important piece of news (from @GoodSource)
If person wants you to retweet specifically to them (though others can read it too, if they want), then insert @person before Retweet and the original message. So you might tweet:
@person Retweeting: On Friday, I was walking down the street when...
There are some fancy ways (using 3rd.-party applications) of avoiding the typing (or some of the other manual steps), but that's really all there is to it.
I’m hoping this helps!
