Follow a Topic? HOW?
How can I follow a TOPIC as designated with a # sign?
People attend different events and I'd like to be able to group their tweets together. People mark these events with a # or a hash or a pound sign.

Inappropriate?Hi there. Since you mention the pound sign, please see http://hashtags.org
Unrelated to hashtags, but still relevant to following topics -- please see this FAQ page about Twitter's Track feature.
I’m in a good mood

Inappropriate? From what I can tell, the "#" sign marks a particular word as being used intentionally for a particular purpose, differentiating it from the same word used in regular conversations having nothing to do with your particular purpose. But like Jeff, I didn't know how to search for these #words. I couldn't get tweetscan to find them.
I did find the site called hashtags.org but you have to follow @hashtags and, apparently, send your #word tweets to that account. To find all tweets with that #word you go to http://hashtags.org/tag/[tag]. For example, http://hashtags.org/tag/debate would list all tweets carrying the "#debate."
Personally, I don't prefer this method. I don't want to follow an account and get all sorts of messages I couldn't care less about, and the search feature is annoying to me. There must be better ways.
By the way, I visited the Twitter article regarding tracking and it says they have disabled the tracking feature.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Hi Allison. Yes, tracking was disabled sometime after I posted my reply above (6 months ago).
Twitter search is now probably the easiest way to find keywords that are marked by hashtags.
For example, here's the search URL for #debate:
http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%2... -
Inappropriate?not everyone uses a hashtag, while spammer uses multiple hashtags in one tweet. so, if you search twitter just by hashtag, you are going to miss a lot. a better approach is to reply on semantic/nlp analysis of the content of each tweet. free website http://web2express.org uses such approach to auto-discover topics from real time conversations. from web2express digest app, you can also create topics and add all necessary keywords to capture all related tweets for each topic. I'm developing this free twitter app to make it easier for people to follow and talk about topics.
