Follow without receiving updates
I would like to be able to follow people, without getting their updates. At the moment I manage the volume of incoming tweets by following and unfollowing people every now and then. The disadvantage is that people keep getting "... is following you on twitter" emails from me quite often and they can't send me direct messages.

Inappropriate? While this doesn't directly solve your issue, I thought I'd mention that there's a third-party application called TweetDeck that lets you group the people you follow into different categories... so that you're sure not to miss the tweets of the people that are important to you.
See http://www.tweetdeck.com
Here's how they describe their app:TweetDeck enables users to split their main feed (All Tweets) into topic or group specific columns allowing a broader overview of tweets.
The default columns can contain All Tweets from your timeline, @replies directed to you and direct messages.
The GROUP, SEARCH and REPLIES buttons then allow the user to make up additional columns populated from the live tweet information. Once created these additional columns will automatically update allowing the user to keep track of a twitter threads far easier. -
Thanks.
I've tried TweetDeck a couple of times, but it is very unstable on my system (64 bit Ubuntu Linux) and I much prefer Twhirl for various other reasons.
But it may be a very good solution for others. -
Inappropriate? In my case, I actually maintain two Twitter accounts. One is a private account that only follows the 30 or so people whose updates I want to be sure I don't miss. I never update this account and explicitly tell people not to bother checking it since I won't be updating it.
My main account is the only one that I update but it follows 800+ people so it's a constant flow of tweets. 8-)
This is definitely not the ideal solution, but it has worked for me well enough for over a year now.
