following number never changes even though I keeo getting more followers...

My blog has a twitter account and we've been getting a steady stream of new followers every week, but a month or more ago--one day suddenly the amount of followers changed by like half! and since then even with the new followers it seems the amount of followers, the number never changes. its like others are being kicked off! what's happening??
