How do you add symbols to twitter messages, such as musical notes? I've seen them but cannot figure out how to create them myself.

Inappropriate?Could you please post a few links to some tweets which are examples of what you would like to do? Then we can try to work out how it's done!

Inappropriate?Well, I have solved it, sorta kinda. My PC-using friend uses alt codes, but those codes don't work on a Mac for producing the non-grammatical characters I was looking for. But if Mac users employ the Character Palette, they can find some characters such as the heart, checkmark, smiley faces, etc that they can then insert into the Twitter application they are using.
What I did:
Go to System Preferences and then "input menu"
Make sure the "Character palette" box is checked
Close System Preferences
Find the international flag on the Mac menu bar
Choose Show Character Palette
Choose Miscellaneous from the list on the left side (or whatever category of symbols you prefer)
Choose the symbol you want to use from the right hand side by clicking on it, which highlights it
Click the Twitter message box
Click the insert button on the Character Palette; this inserts the symbol into the Twitter message pane.
I believe that success with this depends on a few things, not all of which I am aware, but I have Leopard and am using Twitterific and Twitterfox. On Twitterific my direct message with a symbol appeared to send but didn't show up on my Twitterific timeline and was never responded to, although she got my non-symbol messages. My symbol and message showed up fine when I used Twitterfox or Twitterrific without making it a direct message.

Inappropriate? On Windows (don't know about MAC) there is a Character Map (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools). Make a shortcut to put on tool bar. The Times New Roman character set copies to Twitter. You have to scroll down a long way to get to the heart but it works! ♥

Inappropriate? There's also TwitterKeys, a small tool with a link that can be dragged to your browser's Bookmarks toolbar.
For even more special characters, see Character entities in HTML on Wikipedia.
Pick a Name from the first column and enclose it (without spaces) between & ; to display the special character.
Thus & hearts ; becomes ♥ when it's tweeted.
Bear in mind that any one of these special characters - including those from TwitterKeys - will consume several characters of your 140 characters / tweet allowance.
