How to only get direct msgs on mobile phone & not all tweets?
How can I set my mobile phone to receive only direct messages from people I'm following (and have enabled for device updates) and not all tweets?

Once you set up your SMS (mobile), just send the word ON to Twitter and it'll reply with "Updates are on. Turn them off by sending 'off'."
By default, the only thing you'll get via SMS are your direct messages (DMs). So the answer to your question is by not doing anything after you setup your phone, you're good to go.
More advanced...
- If you later decide to get updates from some of your friends, you can do so by logging in and go to your "Following" page at http://www.twitter.com/friends There you'll see option for "Device updates on/off"
- You can also try out the 'track' feature. See Twitter's official FAQ page on that feature
