I can't set up my phone with Twitter; is my phone supported?
If your phone isn't working with Twitter, the first step is making sure it's verified.
You generate your verification code when you add your phone to your settings page. If you refresh the page and the code is still there after sending it to Twitter, your phone is not verified. If verification is not successful, make sure your phone is compatible with Twitter. A simple test before contacting your provider is sending HELP to Twitter to see if you get a reply. If you do, your phone works!
For US, Canadian, and Indian residents: if you don't receive a reply from the HELP command, check with your provider to make sure that texting to short codes, particularly 40404, 21212, and/or 5566511, is enabled.
(Hint: send something like "weather, san francisco" to Google's short code, 46645, to see if your phone works with other short codes.)
Some phone companies don't support messaging to short codes. The following carriers are not supporting messaging to Twitter's short codes:
-Cellular One
-Metro PCS
-Cincinnati Bell
-Cricket
If you contact a provider that does not support Twitter that you don't see listed here, contact support@twitter.com and we'll trade you a t shirt for the heads up.
For international residents: if you don't receive a reply from the HELP command, check with your provider to make sure that you can send SMS messages to +44 762 4801423. If you do receive a reply from HELP but your phone is still not verified, there is most likely an error in the format of the phone number (such as a missing country code, extra zero, etc.) Try removing your number and re-adding to generate a new code, and send again.
If you've tried everything above and still can't verify your phone, send your Twitter username and associated email address with the following information to Twitter Support for investigation:
1. Country, city:
2. Mobile Number:
3. Mobile Provider/Carrier:
4. Date/Timestamp of last attempted message sent to Twitter (if you don't have one, send HELP and use the info from the latest message.)
For those who cannot use Twitter via SMS, you can use your mobile web browser to access m.twitter.com. Alternatively, try signing up for email updates with Twittermail.com, or use one of the many 3rd party applications listed here:

Inappropriate?There is a huge problem for some people like myself .. the international number is the UK number ... so you can Verify your phone and update your status ... BUT you can't SMS recieve updates as I think that info comes from the USA.
Int Dialing codes to say where I live Grand Cayman are different from the UK than they are from the USA. -
Inappropriate?For Cincinnati Bell users, is there a "long code" that can be used instead of 40404? pre-iPhone, I had used one. Now, my wife (still on CBW) is joining. SMS is much easier/faster than the web on her phone. -

Inappropriate?For some of us, saying sending an SMS to a "short code" is a meaningless terminology. What this "answer" needs to provide is a clear and concise step by step explanation for those of us who have not been "texting" since puberty.
Some of us have survived all the way into our 40's with antiquated cell phones like the Razr and never felt an urge to carry on meaningless sessions texting (until we upgraded to better phones like the Blackberry Pearl).
So, if answers on this topic are provided in the future, I respectfully suggest they be formulated to take in to consideration a portion of the audience does not have the same level of prior experience as the individuals who knew the answer in the first place. We would not be here looking for an answer if we already knew how to solve the problem. Start at the beginning and try it again...

Inappropriate?I am with Cincinnati Bell, and although I cannot send an SMS message to 40404, I can send one to 46645 (GOOGL) and receive a reply right away.
My theory? Cincinnati Bell (and Cricket, for that matter) offer free incoming SMS messaging to all of their customers, and therefore don't want the high traffic of Twitter updates coming in to their customers. Just a theory, but I think it makes sense.
Also, for what it's worth, at one point Twitter manually changed my account to work with 1-415-283-8611 instead of 40404, but that number doesn't work anymore either. -
Inappropriate?Cincinnati Bell Wireless doesn't require contracts, so we're free to leave any time. If the Twitter issue is enough to make you switch carriers, tell the customer service rep--they'll generally transfer you to someone who has a better chance of making something happen. If enough of us tell the account people that we're thinking of switching so we can use Twitter on our phones, maybe they'll start to see the problem of not supporting it.

The + symbol tells your mobile phone that the first few digits that will follow will be the country code. 44 is the country code for the UK.
Twitter users outside the US, Canada, and India communicate with Twitter through the UK number.

Inappropriate?My husband and I both use Sprint and use texting all the time. He was able to get his phone to verify easily, but mine is not verifying at all.
I don't get any response from twitter or google. Google used to give me responses back until a few months ago.
Is it possible that Sprint could conditionally support short codes? or is there another issue here?
Also, on a different note, the way sessions are handled with twitter is quite dysfunctional. I log in to twitter in one browser while my husband is logged in in another browser and some of the pages inside twitter recognize me as being logged in while others like Devices think that my husband is logged in.
I agree with keeping the comments nice, these are humans we're dealing with and they're offering a free service. I, for one, am very grateful for the service.

Inappropriate?My wife also got her phone to verify but I have not been able to get my phone to verify. I text Help and I receive a reply. I text on and i receive a reply that it is on but I do not receive text messages and I do have all of my followers marked as device on. I agree that the directions the site are not clear. My wife and I both had to dig into the help files to try and figure this out. We had no idea about 40404 until we read the how to verify articles. This info needs to be up front on the site.

Inappropriate?I contacted "tech services" for Alltel, they had never heard of Twitter, when they checked the website they informed me my phone a K1M Krazer by Motorola does not work with Twitter, you can't put the + at the beginning of the text.

The issue is that I can't put the + in front of the number to text to. I asked the "tech", and she said the phone supported international texting, but it didn't support working with twitter. I don't understand the difference.

There shouldn't be any difference, afaik. The international Twitter number is just like any other number as far as the phone (and your mobile company) is concerned.

Try to type two zeros instead of the + symbol, that is 00447624801423. I found that out accidentally, and made that number work.

Inappropriate?Lora, from what I can see of this K1M Krazer photo, the plus symbol is on the zero key.
While composing a text message, try holding the zero key down for a few seconds and see if the phone recognizes that you want the plus sign. -
Inappropriate?Yeah, that's what I thought, although when I tried to update my phone I no longer could use MY music as ringtones, I needed to buy them.

Inappropriate?Twittermail works with Cincinnati Bell, at least with my phone. Just get a twittermail account and set your phone's "email center" as 0000000000. However, I can't recieve tweets. Any ideas on how to do this? My phone can recieve emails, but twittermail only sends you @replies, not all of your followed people's tweets.
