I learned the hard way that you can't start a Twitter with the word "help"...
...as in "help! trapped in house with dog! send... um... movies and diet coke!"
It seems like there could be specialized syntax for Twitter-specific help like "t-help" or "twitterhelp" to address this. Additionally, there is no feedback mechanism on the web interface that lets you know this is not allowed, so I tried a bunch of times and then filed (ironically!) a help request. I figured it out when I went to post via SMS and got an autoresponse and realized "aha! that must be it!"

Inappropriate?a letter preceding all commands would do it -- like "d" for direct, but "t" for tell twitter, perhaps.

Inappropriate?There are certain words that an SMS service must respond to in order to be in compliance with industry guidelines. These include HELP, STOP, QUIT and so on.
In addition to those we have our own, service-specific commands like D, GET, WHOIS.
We try to keep the set of commands relatively small, but since a message starting with HELP must always respond with a help message (or we get shutdown), this will likely remain a failure mode for any updates prefixed with a command.

Inappropriate?ah. that makes sense. ideally there would be some sort of feedback mechanism that explains this, as those seem like fairly common words that someone might try to use. -
