Hi Brian,
It's not you, it's us.
The bad news is...
This is a common problem with all Canadian phone providers and Twitter.
The good news is...
It's quite fixable! In addition to your Twitter username and associated email address, we need the following information to handcode your stuff, and then you'll be all set:
1. Country, city:
2. Mobile Number:
3. Mobile Operator/Carrier:
4. Date/Timestamp of last message sent to Twitter (if you don't have one, send HELP to 21212 and send the information from the latest message.)
Send a message to support@twitter.com and we'll fix you fast!
I’m happy to help

Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem in Canada on Rogers. Everyone gets my tweets - can't recieve any. Tried using it on a Bell phone with my acct - worked fine. Back on Rogers again and - no dice. Its not necessarily Rogers either, my best friend's works on Rogers. I think Twitter just hates me cause I have an iPhone. (:P)

Inappropriate?Do you support SMS for countries outside of North America? I sent an SMS using my cell on Chung Hwa Telecom. I received a response to the code asking for my name. Gave my name and then nothing. No messages post. It just doesn't work. I'm assuming that this is because I'm outside of the United States and Canada. Is this the case?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I followed Crystal's instructions and sent those details to support@twitter.com on March 13th, 2008. Still waiting for a reply/fix.
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate? Thanks Crystal! I wasn't upset with the timeframe... just a little confused that there was no acknowledgement e-mail. I'm really impressed with the customer service (especially for a free product)!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?I'm waiting for the fix to come my way, after sending a message to support several days ago.
-
It takes a *long* time, but they do get it done eventually. -
Inappropriate?I've emailed support twice. No reply and no fix yet.
-
Inappropriate?Based on messages I have seen elsewhere, it sounds like it takes a week or two after you send mail to support (I am still waiting). If it gets fixed, I'll be sure to post the time interval (and maybe on my blog too).
-
Inappropriate? It's somewhat hard to be at all annoyed with this silly bug on a free service, but what's not clear out of the information above is if you should stop sending SMSes to twitter once you've emailed support... I'd like to keep updating via SMS during this issue, but if we have to send in the timestamp of the last sent message to twitter, doesn't that invalidate the support message as soon as you send your next SMS?
I don't want to harass anyone just to keep them updated on the last time I sent an SMS in... -
Inappropriate?Same problem. Only sending works. I know I can get SMS from web sites, for example from Facebook.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? Thanks Crystal, things seem to be working for me now :)
I’m glad it's finally working :)
-
Inappropriate? Many thanks Crystal! It works great now (takes about 5 seconds to get a new message... so fast!) If others get the same problem, be patient, it's worth the wait!
-
Inappropriate?Thank you Crystal and the Twitter folk. I'm very happy and it's working for me in Atlantic Canada. Yay!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I'm having this problem as well. I'm with Telus, though. (I live in New Brunswick). I couldn't update or receive updates from twitter via sms, but then I called my phone companies support and they "refreshed" my account. I can now update via sms, but I still don't receive updates.
I emailed Twitter support, and updated my problem a few times, I still haven't received a response yet, though. -
Hi Sara. It usually takes 5 to 6 working days before you receive a reply from Twitter support (they appear to be dealing with a bit of a backlog, unfortunately). -
Inappropriate?Ok, I just moved to Rogers (from Telus, for the iPhone) and now I have this same problem. Seeing this thread, I have just sent an email to Twitter support with the information requested. How long is the turnaround time on requests like this?
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?I'll be looking into these tonight for you! Stay tuned.

Inappropriate?I can change my twitter updates via sms but I don't receive any notification from twitter on my phone.
I even tried to do : Get friendsname and it doesn't work.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I was having this problem until I did some digging and found this page.
I've emailed twitter support so hopefully they can update quickly.
I’m undecided
-
Mine's fixed! It took about, well, 9 days according to the comments. -
Inappropriate?Same Problem here, e-mailed support and hoping they can get back to me soon.
Virgin Mobile here
I’m sad
-
checked on support request, this one is already fixed, xemoka confirmed in the request that it is working perfectly. -
Inappropriate? This is tolerable as long as registration doesn't take too long. Anybody know if there's still a backlog?
I’m undecided
-
Andrew, I can't seem to find your request, do you have the 6 digit support request number? (Don't include letters.) -
Inappropriate?Update: the issue has been fixed for me. I followed the instructions above and Twitter's support team fixed the problem within a couple of days.
I’m Twitterly overjoyed. ;)
-
We've sent your information before, and it looks like the number is properly routing. I've resubmitted your info today so they can double check to make sure everything is correct. -
Inappropriate?Have the same problem with Virgin Mobile. Emailed support last week and no joy yet but I am hopeful. Will post when issue resolved for me.
I’m frustrated
-
iain, your information has been submitted, it should take about 24 hours to fix, you'll receive a reply to your support ticket from me when it is fixed. -
thanks - I appreciate the help -
what's that I hear - a Tweet. Yes it is - it is now working, thank you very much !!! -
Inappropriate?I have the same problem. I gave twitter support the info they need and they say that my phone should be routed. However I still am unable to receive sms updates from twitter (but can send to twitter just fine).
I'm with Koodo in the GTA
I’m frustrated
-
Hi Scotty, reading through your support ticket, I do see that we submitted the info and received confirmation that your phone should be working. However, Koodu is a unique carrier because they use multiple large carriers to route your messages. For example, some people have said that their provider is Koodo, but their phone's email address is 5145551212@telus.net, etc.
Does your phone have an email address, or do you know which of the main carriers your particular company uses to route its messages? If you know the main carrier, we can re-route the messages properly. I replied to your support request, so we can continue diagnosing the problem there if you'd like. -
My phones email address is a @msg.koodomobile.com. I'm not too sure what main carrier is used, I thought it was telus. I can do some research tonight when I get back from work. Thanks for the help :) -
Inappropriate? From what I can see, the following people are still waiting for Twitter to enable sms delivery to their Canada-based phones:
- Alphonse
- xemoka
- andrewdevon
- thetraveller
- Scottyj
Did I miss anyone? -
thanks for helping out, mdy! :) -
Inappropriate?Hi guys, I'm looking into it today. We've had some problems with people receiving mail, so check to see if your phone is working by sending ON, and then a command, such as GET + user name, like so:
get crystal
That should return my last Twitter update if your phone is ON and it is fixed. I'll post another update with more details in a moment.

replied to your support request, just awaiting confirmation from our Canadian provider. -
Inappropriate?Just sent off the email to support. Hopefully they'll get me working soon.
-
it's in progress, we're still awaiting confirmation from our Canadian provider. -
we're awaiting a response from our canadian provider, I'll send you an update when it's complete. -
Still nothing here either. Been a week now. -
I can check on it for you if you provide some information, such as user name. I'm not finding a twitter account with "masterno." thanks! -
Sorry Cristal, my twitter name is ProfNoel -
@masterno, yours should be working within 24 hours. -
Getting txts since yesterday. Thanks Crystal! -
Inappropriate?Yeah, I sent a ticket in on September 30th, haven't heard back. Crystal, help?!
I’m sad
-
Almost fixed, I'm just awaiting a reply from our Canadian provider to confirm. -
Just got a text from Twitter! Thanks for the help, Crystal -
Woo! Started getting txts last night. Thanks Crystal! -
Inappropriate?Just sent in support ticket. Wonder how many twitter-users still have this problem... Is a fix possible somewhere in the future?
Thanks, Hans.
I’m curious
-
Still not working... Hope it gets fixed soon... -
Still not working... Hope it gets fixed soon... -
Inappropriate? My Fido phone was working fine from day 1, but nothing I sent in after Wednesday has worked. I'm still receiving updates though, or I was until I deleted my phone and started over, and now nothing is working. Could that be related to this? I'm sending in a support ticket anyway
-
Inappropriate? There seems to have been a glitch in their service yesterday. The txt I sent to Twitter after around 4:30pm on the Telus network didn't show up on Twitter. I'm now receiving, but still not able to send. Thankfully, Ping.fm is still working with Twitter, but I have to use the website to respond to @replies and dms.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?@Mike: I have exactly the same problem then you! I sent a request too.
-
Inappropriate?I haven't been able to verify my phone since joining twitter on Nov. 1st. Sent in a support request 7 days ago but haven't heard anything.
-
Hi madfatter. Twitter's sms provider experienced sms problems with 21212 beginning October 28. However, I did see replies in other threads yesterday from other Canadians, saying that they were able to verify their phones now.
If you feel up to a little experimenting, could you try going back to http://twitter.com/devices, deleting your mobile number there, then adding it back to get a new verification code? I don't know if it will work, but since others were able to verify their phones yesterday, perhaps a "reboot" of the phone settings will do the trick. -
Inappropriate? My phones up and working again, as of a few days ago

Thank you very much! -
Inappropriate?Hello,
I opened a support ticket 11 days ago with all the details about my account. How long does it usually take to get this addressed?
Thanks. -
Inappropriate?From: http://status.twitter.com/post/617036...
Unexpected changes in our billing have forced us into a difficult situation with our Canadian SMS service. We can’t afford to support this service given our current arrangement with our providers (where costs have been doubling for the past several months.) As a result, effective today we are no longer delivering outbound SMS over our Canadian shortcode (21212).
The ability to update Twitter over SMS will still be supported over 21212. But we know that this is only part of the experience and we want to make Twitter work in the way folks want ... regardless of where they live.
There is a realistic, scalable SMS solution for Canada (and the rest of the world.) We’re working on that and will post more details on the Twitter blog as we make progress.

So does this mean that I'll never be able to twitter with my phone? I wouldn't mind so much not getting tweets, but tweeting sometime would be nice.
I’m worried about my tweets.

Yes, you can still tweet via SMS. However, you cannot receive updates from people who you have chosen to receive updates via SMS. -
Inappropriate? For Twitter updates (sending AND receiving) on a mobile phone that has mobile email (most SMS phones do) take a look at http://www.tweetbymail.com for a solution.
I'm using it successfully in Canada (with Virgin Mobile on the Bell network)
I’m happy

I’m confused
-
Inappropriate? So if we send an email to support@twitter with all the info needed, it wouldn't work anymore?? 'Cause I'd love to receive tweet updates on my phone..
I’m fustrated
-
Inappropriate?Using a Treo 600 on an Evolve pay-as-you-go 'plan'. I can send tweets, but not receive. I can receive SMS. I though MTS used Bell services?
I’m Confused
-
Ok. Not sure if this will work, but my number was set to private for outbound calls. Fixed that. Sent 'help' to 21212 and received a response. Now to see if one of the people I'm following tweets and I get it on the treo... -
Well, there was an update, and I did not receive it :-( -
Inappropriate? They have stopped updates to Canadian numbers. You can send updates to Twitter but not receive. That was about 6 months ago.
Say thank you to our greedy cell phone providers...our prices are one of the highest in the developed world.
I’m disappointed
-
They brought it back. Rogers, Fido and Bell now supports Twitter and I have been receiving tweets by txt for a week or so. You can check out this link: Twitter in Canada
