Invites seem to not being sent
I just created an account and had some office friends to do the same. We then wanted to follow each other and sent invites. They never showed up in our inboxes.

If I understood correctly, you and your friends already have Twitter accounts. If that's the case, you can bypass the invitation process and just follow each other directly.
There are many ways to follow someone:
1. VIA SMS
Send 'follow username' to Twitter.
For example: ask your friends to send 'follow gscherl' and they'll start following you.
2. VIA WEB
You can go to the web page of each Twitter user and click on the 'Follow' button that appears below their name. You'll need to be logged in for this to work.
For example, after logging in, your friends can go to http://twitter.com/gscherl and click on the 'Follow' button. If they want to receive your updates via IM or SMS, they should also set Notifications to 'On' after clicking 'Follow'
