Is it possible for an @reply to be attached to a particular tweet? how?
Can @replies be like trackbacks to blog posts, attached to a particular post instead of the whole stream from a particular person?

Inappropriate?Hi Ted,
I don't think a tweet (even an @ reply) can be like a trackback ping. I guess the best thing you can do is to include a link to the blog in your tweet. e.g. "hi everyone, check out this post I read just now http://www.someURL.com"
However, Twitter does have a feature that I'm not sure if you are aware of. When you @ someone, it'll take that user's last tweet and link your tweet to it by adding a "in reply to username" link in your tweet.
Here's an example. My friend Jason @thomashan (me)
http://twitter.com/harrisja/statuses/...
And you'll notice the "in reply to ThomasHan" on that page, which will link to the last tweet I had prior to his tweet.
Of course, Twitter really can't link them into thread (at least not yet...), so if one tweets something else in between, it won't make much sense.
Hope this helps and answers what you are asking for.

Inappropriate?Yes, I'm talking about this 2nd scenario. Why does an @reply link back to an arbitrary tweet? That's what I'm talking about, trackback to a tweet, not to a blog post. So I guess my answer is, "no, can't be done." Thanks!

Inappropriate?I'm also would like to see the second scenario implmented in twitter. Giving context for a reply would be very helpful.

Inappropriate?I second this. As actually when i reply to someone's tweet, it links to the "in reply to" but actually that tweet has nothing to do with the reply i sent.
Thanks for clarifying though. -
Inappropriate?it looks like the developers have finally decided to address this problem

Inappropriate? You can already go on quotably.com and 'correct' which tweet a reply is in response to, but there's no firefox extension or anything yet which will overlay this information into twitter.
One technique I like is taking the tweet id (like, 888819463) and appending it after the @reply. If I wanted to respond to that certain tweet, I'd write @TedErnst (888819463) The message. Another method that might work is @TedErnst#888819463, I think that might work too. Since each tweet id is unique, it'd be cool if it would still append "in reply to Ted Ernst" if I did @#888819463 which would be a shortcut to say at tweetid 888819463. It still knows (on the twitter site) who did it, and since the xml file that is given in the API actually has an in reply to field then apps would know who it was to:
<in_reply_to_status_id>888819463</in_reply_to_status_id>
<in_reply_to_user_id>2681</in_reply_to_user_id>
This is a pretty cool idea, I think, but I doubt it will ever be implemented, except maybe in greasemonkey scripts. Then, of course, it would have to catch on... -
Inappropriate?I saw the Google Groups message but this really needs to be implemented on Twitter's level, so that when I click "reply" on a specific tweet, it's automatically the one linked to on "in reply to" in my new tweet. This is my number one Twitter annoyance.
I’m angry

Dude, they JUST implemented this on the backend, I'm sure it will be on the site soon enough. You're angry that they haven't done it in just a few days? -
He actually recently said that the implementation on twitter.com is still in the works: http://groups.google.com/group/twitte... -
Inappropriate?The Greasemonkey script: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/3...
