Is Somebody Following Me? (Tracking by Email)

Can someone find your Twitter account by putting in your email address? I have a Twitter account that I have not shared with anyone as far as friends, and someone managed to find it without me telling them. I can only guess that it might have been because they have my personal email address. If this is possible, is there anyway to stop it from happening again. hanks.
