Is the following cap permanent or temporary?
I was just curious as to whether the following cap was going to be a permanent thing or not.
I've actually grown tired of simply whining openly about it, so I figured it was time to pursue a more constructive path. Look at me, all mature and stuff.

Inappropriate? It's my understanding that the following cap can be appealed by submitting a support ticket at http://twitter.com/help
-
Thanks, mdy! I've filed one of those as well. -
Inappropriate?Satisfaction. I don't has it.
I’m frustrated that I can't seem to get a simple answer to a simple question.
-
Hi Rick, what is your user name or request id number? Note: please don't include the letters in the support request id. The first 6 digits will do :) -
Inappropriate? On the upside, I don't get the "you've reached the following limit" message anymore. On the downside, I still can't follow anyone new.
I’m seeing progress I think
-
Inappropriate?Just checking in, once again. Hoping for a response.
I’m thinking I just saw a tumbleweed roll by.
-
Inappropriate?Wow. If you were looking to completely crush my ego, you've succeeded. Now, if you could just answer the question I asked, we can call it even.
I’m feeling completely ignored
-
Inappropriate?Hi Rick, I'm so sorry! :) No ego crushing intended.
The follow limit is 2,000 until your followers exceed 2,000. If you have more than 2,000 followers, your limit becomes ratio-based and fluctuates with your follower number. Right now you've got a lot of followers, but since you don't have more than 2,000 you have to follow a number of folks closer to the number of folks who follow you (you'll be good in the 1,900 range.) If you remove some people, you'll be able to follow again, but only up to 2,000 until more than 2,000 follow you. Once you have more than 2,000 followers, you can follow more people.
I hope that makes sense, if not, let me know.
Thanks!
Crystal

That just sucks!! So essentially what you're saying is that if I'm pro-actively looking to listen in to more conversations, I can't listen to more people than are listening to me???
That means I can't just be a fly on the wall anymore?
It would help, if there was some error message, or something more meaningful than a non-response! -
magitam, I suggest you augment your ability to listen in on conversations by using Twitter Search at http://search.twitter.com
You can view tweets about practically any topic without having to follow anyone. -
@mdy the problem is I don't want to listen to conversations based on topic, but listen to what people are talking about.. so for example, I'm listening to South African, New Zealand, and Australian twitterers just to hear what they're talking about.. I don't want to necessarily unfollow them, or know what topics I want to listen to.. Just their conversations in general.. I think that's the biggest problem - people think it's all about "what" when sometimes it's only about "who" -
Hi magitam. you can still listen in on specific users via Twitter Search. You just need to use the "from:username" parameter.
For example, I can see all the messages you've posted using this search: http://search.twitter.com/search?q=from:magitam
You can also use the OR operator to get the tweets of more than just one person in a search. For example, this returns all posts from magitam and stevepavlina: http://search.twitter.com/search?q=from:magitam+OR+from:stevepavlina
http://tweetgrid.com provides a mechanism for saving multiple search parameters so you don't have to remember them.
If you see a tweet that you want to reply to, you can click the "Reply" link in the search results and it will take you to your /home page (assuming you're logged into Twitter from the same browser session)
I realize this is a "poor man's workaround" of sorts, because it requires going to another browser window, but I figure I'd share it just the same.
I seriously doubt that Twitter will be lifting the follow limit anytime soon given the way spammers have been abusing the follow feature (though of course that's just my personal opinion and I can't speak for the company). -
crystal, that's pretty shabby, because @biz and you all there let your little pals from Silicon Valley rack up the following as rapidly as they wished, which is how they increased their followers, duh, using the @scoblelizer formula of just plucking every single person who could put 140 characters together coherently out of the Public feed and friending all your friends' friends. If an online game did this and nerfed the newbie characters' powers so drastically and let oldbies have such a gigantic advantage the newbies would all flee that MMORPG. Maybe that's what you're hoping. -
Inappropriate? Thanks, Crystal. I figured it had something to do with my being neither charming enough nor interesting enough to break through the cap.
It's nice to have that confirmed.
It would be great if you posted this explanation in the FAQ referenced in the "You've hit the following limit" message.
I’m through whining now that I know the answer.

Why do we always assume it's us? Low self-esteem? We have to work on that, LOL :) Actually I'm glad you "whined" because this is info I wasn't aware of either! -
Inappropriate?I see this thread is 6 to 7 months old, and nothing has been done to address the basic unfairness of the situation.
I'm really upset about this, I was duped by Twitter into following everyone I thought might be interesting, with no warning about the Follow limit or its draconian effects.
Now I can't follow-back anyone who follows me, and it seems to have plateaued at as many new followers as there are un-followers, so I am not getting anywhere.
And please don't somebody give me that garbage about un-following people who have un-followed me, how am I to tell? And how long am I to give someone to follow-me back before I un-follow them first?
This sucks.
There should be no restriction on following-back any number of people who follow you first.
I’m angier by the day that this goes unresolved
