Also I was wondering about SMS. When I want to receive tweets from people I'm following (who I have device notification turned on for), I SMS "on" to 40404. When I want to stop receiving tweets, I SMS "off."
I may be wrong on this, but I think regardless of if you have texted "on" or "off," you will get an SMS if someone direct messages you. I would like the same thing done for an @reply. -

The official way to do this was to tweet track srizvi1.
You would then have received an SMS of any tweet containing the string srizvi1 - which would of course have included any @srizvi1 replies.
Unfortunately, Twitter took the track feature offline some weeks ago.
They intend to reprogram track in improved form one day.
The sidebar of the Twitter Status page displays current status information about individual Twitter components
under the heading Status per Feature.
The colours indicate
Green = All systems OK
Orange = Not in full working order
Red = Offline
If the mouse is moved over the coloured bar, slightly more detailed information shows up,
e.g. track: Offline. Needs reworking. -

Inappropriate?I came here looking for the answer to the same question myself. I'd be nice to have my @ replies and direct messages sent to me via text or at least a notification that SomeTwitterUser has sent me a direct message/reply.

Inappropriate?TweetBeep can notify you via email when someone sends you an @ reply. It checks your account every hour. I tried it out and it works great.

I use TwitterMail, and it's great for posting , but the messages with @replies only come once every so often, not the moment you get an @reply.
