Is there another way to follow twitter besides the twitter website and cell phone? Maybe have it run on the side of my desktop?

Inappropriate?There are many desktop programs available. I like Twhirl. You have to have Adobe Air installed for it to work. (There's a link on Twhirl's site.)
If Twhirl doesn't suit you, here's a Google search.
