is there any way to get rid of the election 2008 stuff entirely?
is there any way to get rid of the election 2008 stuff entirely? if i click on the 'X', there's still an obtrusive 'E08' button on the menu. i wouldn't mind the E08 button so much if it didn't have a grey background-- it looks out of place and draws too much attention to itself. annoying.

Inappropriate? The full bar also keeps popping back up whenever I revisit my profile page. I find this especially annoying because a) there are a lot of other issues with Twitter, I don't know why this was implemented first; b) my profile clearly states that I live in Canada, why do you think it's appropriate to show me this? If I wanted to know about your country's election coverage, I'd go ahead and look it up.
I’m annoyed
-
yep, especially since we canadians have our own election to worry about! -
Inappropriate?Nobody seems to know how to get rid of this crap. I am on the verge of just removing Twitter.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? If your browser can use adblock, this filter will remove all sign of that annoying banner:
twitter.com#H1(class=elections-promotion)
(With thanks to Dave who indulged me in some drama in another thread about this. :D)
I’m annoyed with Twitter for poorly targeted banner spam.

aha, i don't have adblock, but in firefox i can use this information and put the following in my userContent.css file:
@-moz-document domain(twitter.com) {
h1.elections-promotion { display: none !important }
}
that does the trick! thanks! -
I use Firefox too. You just need to use the AdBlock Plus addon.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...
It's free. -
Inappropriate?Oh, thank you so much! This Election banner thing is incredibly irritating, and should NOT be forced upon Twitterers without their consent. Offer it as an option if you must, but give us an easy opt-out!!!
I’m annoyed with Twitter
-
Inappropriate?I share the criticism. I also want to get rid of the banner. I live in Europe and really don't care an awful lot about US elections. There were in elections in Bavaria and Austria and Belorussia last week, and no banner on Twitter...
I’m annoyed with Twitter

I agree completely with you. Canada has Federal election going on right now as well. The world does not revolve around the US. While I like the idea, either make it localized, optional or get rid of it. -

Twitter is about what you are doing now. Not what is going on now. And I hasten to add that American politics are not "going on now" in dozens of countries where Twitter is being used around the globe. I don't share your view that this banner is in any way generic and will be used to steer conversation onto different non-American subjects in the future. That much is clear from the stylesheet classname: "elections-promotion". This is a promotion. And a poorly target one (that is breeding contempt for Twitter) at that. Begone with it. -
This is a customer feedback issue about how to remove or customize a feature of Twitter that is not desired by certain users, not a philosophical discussion of the merits of that feature in general, so it's not really topical to defend it here anyway -
I think what you are doing now is what's going on now. You, the person are doing something inside of what is going on now. Twitter is the sounding board of your reaction to what you are doing in what's going on now.
It may be raining out and you may twitter and say you are walking in the rain with a simile. Think about it! -
Inappropriate. Glad you have an opinion about the material but this question deals with the issue of removing. Your response does nothing to help. Thanks for playing. -
Inappropriate?I actually really like the election banner. If it defaults to a small button when hidden, I don't see the harm in that. In fact, I just tried it. It's along menu with other items and I find it very unobtrusive.
I suppose twitter could offer an opt-out under settings, "show banner options" or "hide banner options." But the current way seems very unobtrusive. If twitter offered lots of banner options then an opt-out setting would be necessary.
Twitter has stated it is still implementing changes in the sidebar, so who knows what they have coming down the pipeline.
Future options may include multiple banners for opt-out on displaying or hiding. Just speculating. -
i would have to disagree that a button with red and blue text on a differently-coloured background is "unobtrusive". i wouldn't mind it nearly half as much if it matched the rest of the toolbar. as it is, it draws attention to itself. drawing attention != unobtrusive. -
Having a choice is nice and this is the often the case with many web applications, but having no choice lead all the streams down to focal point that Twitter may be working towards as it evolves. Yes does draw attention and yes not unobtrusive. Twitter is being used a sounding board to get people to talk about the trends in life that are happening. It's really trying to pick up what is the next big thing and how people help create that next thing. What ever it is.... -
Inappropriate? In case you missed it Strad, here's what I wrote in an earlier reply to you, in simpler language:
This is a customer feedback form about how to remove or customize a feature of Twitter that some people don't want. Discussion of whether that feature is really good or bad is basically off-topic.
This isn't the place for a debate about whether or not the feature is a good thing. I am getting email notifications for this topic and I am only interested in hearing from people who have an *answer to the question*, which is "is there any way to get rid of the election 2008 stuff entirely?".
Thanks.
I’m repeating myself
-
In case you missed Elana, there an X at the far right hand side of the of the Election 08 bar. This will remove the Election 08 bar from the Twitter.
It can be replaced if you click on the E08 in the menu bar if you have disabled the the 08.
I hope you that you happy with this feedback. It should answer your question.
Have good day! -
@stradviolin: In case you missed it, a better solution than yours has been posted above (it even gets rid of the button). Unfortunately none of the solutions work on ALL browsers. (On smartphones capable of rendering regular (not mobile) webpages for example.) So, while you don't think it's intrusive to have to manually dismiss banner spam every time you visit Twitter, other people do, and that's why this problem will continue to exist until Twitter do the right thing and get rid of it, or make it optional in the preferences, altogether. -
In case you missed it. Elana want's solutions not debates about what is intrusive or not about banner bars. Twitter is a sounding board for people and the right thing for them to do is to keep people talking. I think you have found the meaning of what you are doing now and what's going on while you are doing it. Twitter that to the world and then maybe solutions will be found for your smartphone and other browsers. Twitter is the place for generating and that maybe one reason the 08 is there or people would opt out everything and not generate anything constructive. I am sure the banner will evolve. You will see and then we all get it! -
Inappropriate?@stradviolin no it does not answer the question, because if you actually *read* the question, i say, "if i click on the 'X', there's still an obtrusive 'E08' button on the menu." leaving an ugly button on the toolbar does *not* remove the election stuff *completely*.
I’m irritated at stradviolin's continual missing of the point

Marked inappropriate. Does not deal with the issue at hand. -
Inappropriate?"Intimidate"? lol.
Are you confusing the word intrusive with intimidate?
Stradviolin: I'm sorry you're so upset at being unable to control other people's thoughts on banner spam, and wanting to dismiss it.
Maybe you can go and play your violin in the corner or something?
I’m wondering if stradviolin still wants the last word.

not only is "intimidate" not the right word, but stradviolin also says "don't be piety", which makes no sense. perhaps english is not strad's first language?
and yes, it goes without saying that a flower would be just as intrusive. -
Inappropriate?Let's not feed the troll. There's still hope for a constructive resolution to all this.
I’m discouraged
-
yes, he or she is definitely a troll :) -
Inappropriate?Hello. Saw this tweet from @ev:

Inappropriate?Looks like the fix has been deployed because the Election Bar now remains closed for me when I refresh my home page.
(Fwiw, I checked on Chrome and Firefox 3.0.3 on WinXP.)
