'mark as read' in Twitter and accessible via API

Would love to have Twitter itself track the tweets I've already read. That way I can mark tweets read on the web site and through the API other apps can update when tweets are read. I switch between TweetDeck, the Twitter site, the Twitter mobile site, and sometimes Twhirl -- would be great to have whether my tweets are read follow me every time I access the site.
