Missing Twitters/updates
I have noticed that I am missing many of my friends' twitters/updates when I view them on my twitter home page. If I go directly to a friend's profile page and, for example, they have 4 twitters, I will only see 2 or 3 of those in my list. Why??

I've noticed many of you are missing updates from people who have a ton of followers. Some examples are Scobleizer, ijustine, jasoncalacanis, leolaporte, hotdogsladies, veronica, etc.
In your cases, I can clear the caches but until we've fixed the root of the problem, it wont help forever, only for a little while.
The good news: our engineering team is working on this problem as we speak. We've realized that many people missing updates are followers of at least one profile/person of this type. (This type being, that which has a massive following, in the thousands.)
We hope to have it fixed soon, check this thread for more updates.

Friday PM update.
We've been narrowing down the problem and have made some additional changes which should make things better, but not fixed. We're still working on it here at Twitter HQ and folks are coming in tomorrow as well.
As Crystal pointed out, we're not going to consider it fixed until all the tests pass.

Friday AM Update
We fixed a major bug last night that we think contributed to some, but not all, of the lost updates. We're still making sure that all remaining anomalies are addressed before we consider it 100% fixed.
-We're working on it persistently again today; you will notice improvement, but not normalcy.
-We're not considering the bug "fixed" until all of our tests have completed and we're sure that all updates are appearing.

Official update: our engineering team has been working on this problem as top priority steadily for the last two days; we're still working on it today, and will continue working on it until it's fixed.
The bad news: the problem isn't completely fixed yet.
The good news: we've made headway, and it's much, much better. Fewer and fewer updates are missing from timelines once we manually clear the caches for you. I am clearing the caches for everyone in this thread.
A manual cache clear is the interim solution until the bug is entirely fixed. However, while this will restore more updates to your time line, not all updates will be there. Additionally, we've seen the following results:
-though some updates are revealed, others go missing
-clearing the cache is a temporary fix, and afterward, updates may go missing again. however, the number of missing updates will be fewer.
We're making progress on getting this bug fixed-- I'll post more frequent updates to keep you abreast of the situation. Sorry guys, and thanks for being patient!

The whole team looks at the topics posted in Satisfaction; we're trying to find out what's going on.
Usually it's a caching problem, but it could be related to the move; at this point, we're not sure why, but we're checking it out. In the meantime, in case it is a caching issue, I've cleared all of your caches, and you should now see all updates in your time lines and /home.
If you're still missing updates from a particular person, it's possible that I need to clear their cache as well, so please send the user names to Support, with "missing updates" in the subject line of your email for quick attention:

Hey all,
we're really sorry this bug took so long to fix, and affected so many of you. We've been hard at work for the past several days trying to track it down, and as of about 7:30 PM PST, we fixed a major issue with our internal messaging servers, and it looks like the problem is solved.
We'll be clearing caches pro-actively to make sure you have the most accurate view possible.

I tried the unfollow/follow trick to no avail: a friend just updated and it doesn't show up in the client I'm using, nor on /home nor m.twitter.com. I've noticed this since Saturday on a range of people — from @gruber to @bs (the distinction being a ton of followers vs not as many).

This, BTW has nothing to do with the API, you can see the results from my home page. Look at my username (objo) and then the replies to me to see it. So please do not write this off as a third-party problem. Twitter is receiving their replies and linking them to me, just not putting them in my timeline.

An interesting feature for the UI might be the ability to clear your own cache - might ease the support burden.

Inappropriate?i'm having this problem too. i really really don't like the idea of having to write an e-mail w/ ppls names to say who i don't get an update from. i get the same 3-5 ppls updates all the time and follow about 40 ppl.
PLLEASE do not just blow this off but try to really figure out what is going on.

Inappropriate?After this continuing so long without any official line from twitter (apart from Crystal's post above, which does not explain why for some people, some tweets show up and not others), and having sent a support request 24 hours ago and had no response, I too would be considering jaiku. Many of the people I follow on twitter have stopped posting in the last 24-48 hours anyway - will they return when (if?) this is fixed? I don' t know.
But I don' t know if there's sms support for Jaiku in the UK, and also I use I Want Sandy along with twitter, which isn't possible with Jaiku. Not to mention that I don't have a Jaiku invite (I wouldn't turn one down...hint hint).
I think this could be make-or-break time for twitter. Either this gets sorted out - with regular updates from the twitter team so that users *know* they're working on it - or a lot of users will leave, and twitter will have lost its momentum - and find it very difficult to get that back. I really like the service, and very much hope it's make, rather than break.

According to the messages I have received in response to a few flames they have assigned a VERY high priority to this problem and are working to figure it out. As a software engineer myself I know it is hard to find sporatic issues. I would however suggest to the twitter employees to post here every few hours to just let everyone know they are listening. Just a thought.

Inappropriate?Thank you for the update. I think you have many users who really want the service to succeed but who have been feeling let down by the recent problems and the lack of information from official sources; it's good to see that you seem to be addressing that now.
Some other companies who use Get Satisfaction have ongoing "status" threads where they post current issues and what's being done about them. This makes it easy for users to check if something's already being done about any problems they encounter; I think such a thread might have gone a long way towards reassuring users during the last few days.
(The SMS problem is still happening, btw; could someone perhaps respond on one or more of those threads too?) -

Clearing the cache will not cause you to lose any tweets. What it does is refresh the information showing in your page to show the most current tweets.

we really appreciate all the hard work you're putting into fixing this issue, but I do believe that an official post on the Twitter Blog would probably be a great idea.
This is happening to a lot of people, has been acknowledged by you and frankly isn't helping Twitter PR-wise. Many people are already frustrated enough with Twitters frequent downtime lately and I'm seeing more and more posts and tweets (well, maybe not so much that last one, as I'm having this problem as well...) by people ticked off by this.
Twitter is, IMHO, the best of the micro blogging services out there, but there are alternatives and in this industry a couple bad decisions can turn deadly. The hottest service one day can be practically abandoned the next. There are alternative services after all. People are even talking about Jaiku in this very thread!
Being present here on Satisfaction is absolutely great; something not a lot of companies are willing to do, but I personally feel that Twitter could and should still be doing more in keeping its users up-to-date on issues, especially if they are major such as this one.
Patiently waiting for a fixed timeline and having my SMS notifications fixed...

We've been narrowing down the problem and have made some additional changes which should make things better, but not fixed. We're still working on it here at Twitter HQ and folks are coming in tomorrow as well.
As Crystal pointed out, we're not going to consider it fixed until all the tests pass.

Inappropriate?I almost find this whole twitter problem a little taste of what life would be like without Twitter. I don't like it. have Twitter folks considered adding a donate to the cause bottom somewhere because I feel like my addiction is so fundamental I would certainly donate now and then, just to feel like I'm doing my part.
any how thanks for the updates on getting the bugs fixed. it's nice to know that we aren't being left in the dark.

Inappropriate?Sort of off topic, but related: I would *love* for Twitter to add a new feature (something simple, like photo tweeting by email) and charge $20 a year for it. I'd re-join Twitter in an instant (closed my account b/c of the problems described here).

I live far away from my followers and we've started relying on this keep up with one another. Hope this is sorted soon.

I realize now that I think about it how many tweets I must have been missing in the last week because when I would get home from work I used to have 8 pages to look at and lately it has been about 2 to 3.

Inappropriate?I'm having big problems seeing @ replies -- at least 50% of the time I don't see ANYTHING when I look at the replies tab. I've resorted to using 3rd party tools to try to follow my @ replies because I don't feel I can rely on Twitter to propagate them.

Inappropriate?Things were looking better this morning - I'd more new tweets on my timeline than I've seen in several days - though there were still quite a few missing. Now, however, not only am I missing most of the newest tweets, but some of the old ones that were there a few hours ago have also disappeared from my timeline (including the one in which a friend said that twitter had been delivering posts today so she might forgive it - oh, the irony!)
