New Twitter interface unusable in Opera Mini
Opera Mini, viewing the Standard version of Twitter, has been my main access to Twitter. Until this morning, it worked beautifully in Opera Mini.
With the new interface, it is now impossible to
In other words, Twitter doesn't work any more. The buttons and icons used now ether don't display at all, or can't be clicked.
This could have been predicted beforehand, since Opera Mini doesn't respond to mouseover events (and it can't in any sane way; it's a 120k Java app, and HTML and Javascript are processed remotely by the Opera Mini server, and a compressed page sent to the phone for viewing.)
The Mobile interface has always been inadequate as a substitute (e.g. it won't view favourites). Currently I can mark favourites at m.slandr.net, but to view them I have to go to the new broken interface, so I can't even find all the Twitter features together on one site. Normally I have to use Twitter from a mobile phone as I don't have adequate web access from a PC at home.
What I need:
With the new interface, it is now impossible to
- send a tweet
- delete a tweet
- favourite a tweet
- send a direct message
- delece a direct message

What I need:
- A Twitter interface which doesn't use dynamic HTML for any user operations, or
- The option to view Twitter in the old interface (Emphatically not the Mobile one)
- Meanwhile, a website which gives access to all Twitter's functions, particularly the managing of favourites.

Inappropriate?You don't mention which version of Opera Mini you're using - probably 4.1 ?
What would happen if the Opera Mini server could recognise OnMouseOver objects and e.g. convert them to "normal" buttons?
When will Twitter upgrade its m.twitter.com mobile interface to be cellphone friendly?
On my Siemens MC60 cellphone (using its built-in browser), I can enter username and password - but pressing the OK button has no effect, other than that the button image changes to a pressed button image.
Even if I could get further, m.twitter.com has only limited functionality.
I’m thankful Twitter didn't implement its new UI in Flash
-
Very tall order for mouseover events I think, because it would entail interpreting what the associated javascript was for and it could be any valid javascript.
It should be possible for OnClick objects though - just create a normal button. Provided the object exists, of course. I suspect that in this case, the clickable objects (dustbins etc) are first created by an OnMouseOver script so there'd be nothing to click... -
... It's ironic that while more and more people are accessing the web via mobile phone, more and more websites are making themselves inaccessible to anything except recent versions of PC web browsers. And ironic that a site whose idea is pretty much made for mobile phones should be among them. -
timtfj, I've noticed that you've been using http://m.slandr.net -- does that work well as an alternative in the meantime? -
I can't use m.slandr.net on its own because (i) it can't view Favourites (ii) it currently can't manage followers/followees. Also it gives no indication of DMs which is why I missed yours earlier. I'm finding I have to alternate between m.slandr.net and twitter.com (mobile interface or bits of new interface). That's the worst thing really - not having one single, usable interface that does everything. -
Another problem with m.slandr.net is that links in tweets (?some) get directed to the mobile versions of pages, e.g. for the Science Daily press releases, and the whole point of OM is that normally I can view the desktop version. So really I have to use the new broken Twitter interface for reading so I get the proper pages, then switch interfaces when I want to mark one a favourite (eg the tweet pointing to what I've just read). It's a nightmare. -
Yes, that is indeed frustrating. I find browsing on my phone awkward and clumsy as it is... what more if I have to switch between two sites all the time!
I know it's possible to follow and unfollow in slandr.net using their (+) and (-) icons. But you have to be viewing a user's profile page to do it.
And while the friends list (what they call "Users") shows me the 100 most recently active friends, I can't act on the list; I still have to view the user's profile page to do anything.
Maybe if we ask @roelandp nicely, he'll consider adding a 'view favorites' page. 8-) -
Inappropriate?Yup. I have the same issue... I love the look and flow of the new design. But I use Opera Mini 4.1 on a Nokia N71.
Which means that Twitter is now out of reach for me most of the time. And it's become my primary communication tool.
My need is to get those damned buttons back. Surely this is a simple matter of having the Twitter backend interogating my browser, seeing that it's Opera Mini, and serving a basic html page?

Inappropriate?I've now got a workaround. I'm on my phone ATM so more details on how to do it will follow later.
- Display a single tweet, by clicking "... hours ago". It appears with USABLE star/reply/delete icons. To send a normal tweet, just edit the "reply".
- Create a "menu tweet" like http://is.gd/2USo and assign it to an OM speed dial. The tweet links to usable parts of different Twitter sites. 5 17-char is.gd links will fit in one tweet.
I’m pleased I can use Twitter again, but nervous in case the loophole is removed. And I'd prefer not to need the workaround.

Well theoretically 7 is.gd links plus gaps of 3 chars, or 6 plus gaps of 7 chars, or 5 plus gaps of 13 chars. But 3 or 7 chars isn't much space to write descriptions of the links so I think 5 links is the practical limit ;-) I'll explain later how to set up Opera Mini for easy creation of is.gd links. -
Simpler workaround for tweeting from new interface: assign http://twitter.com/home?status=@ to a speed dial. It gives a page showing the last 20 tweets, with a usable Update button and "@" as default text for the tweet. Or if desired, use some other default text in the link. Eg http://twitter.com/home?status=http:/... sets you up to fill in an is.gd link and send it.
Refreshing the page after sending restores the working button. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the feedback guys, we've got a bug filed and we'll work on getting fixed as soon as we can.
-
Thanks for that. Whoever does the fix needs to know that Opera Mini is effectively a desktop browser viewed remotely, not a mobile browser, so they're not tempted to "solve" it by redirecting us to a mobile site. Most users install Opera Mini precisely in order to access desktop versions of sites and escape from the mobile ones, so being redirected would be an even worse problem - no access at all - than the current one of limited access. -
Inappropriate?I don't have a way to use Opera Mini, but have you tried hahlo.com? It seems more AJAXy, but there's a chance it would work better with Opera than the Twitter site.
-
hahlo.com, while looking cool, does not work on Opera mini for exactly the same reason as the parent issue... -
Inappropriate?this just happend to me right after that hack on tuesday. in my mobile mode it works but go into standard mode and it times out. i have to delete my cookies and only tweet from mobile mode sucks
