not receiving sms messages
this is a continuation of something i reported a while back about my phone not receiving twits even though i've always had sms notifications on.
i hardly ever reach the sms quota by the way. i also have never turned of my notifications and many times have been told to text "on" to the twitter number but after a while it would stop sending. same problem always.
currently i texted "on" to twitter again on sunday (29 dec 2007) and after the 31st i stopped receiving again.
my quota for this week is only 40/250.
texting on to the international number is eating up my credits.
by the way, i am in the philippines. using sun cellular provider. my friends also are having similar problems.

Guys,
We're looking into the issues regarding missing updates across the board. Namely, IM, SMS, web. Our full team is currently dedicated to this and this only. I'll let you know as soon as I have more information; we fixed a big bug last night which will lessen the impact but not completely fix the problems.
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks!

Hi,
See related problem here:
http://getsatisfaction.com/twitter/to...
To paraphrase:
If we send an SMS message to your phone and don't receive a reply from your phone's network confirming that your phone received it, or at the very least, your phone's network did, we turn off notifications automatically to avoid sending costly twitters into space. This might happen if you go to an area with no reception, for example.
You can send ON or HELP to turn updates on again; this auto-shut-off usually happens when there is a problem communicating with your mobile service provider's network.
However, on a side note pertaining specifically to you, we fixed (today) a bug that was causing a slightly different error. You, Amadeus, are included in the bug fix email that I happen to be drafting now :) Hopefully this means the problem is resolved; however, if your notifications shut off regularly, it may be a symptom of what I first mentioned above.
Thanks!
I’m hoping it's resolved.

Inappropriate?Would you know if your other friends who experience the problem are also on Sun Cellular?
I'm asking because I'm on Globe Telecom myself. There was a time before when I stopped receiving sms, but that was when everyone on the UK longcode was having problems.
After they fixed that, it's been quite reliable for me (I also get track alerts) and I only stop getting tweets when I've hit the 250 per week quota.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?i'll try to gather more information. but from what it looks like is that my friends using globe telecom is also having problems. people using smart communications aren't having any problems.
this had been happening since november-decemeber. twitter staff already offered me goodies for my incessant correspondence! haha!
i hope it gets resolved soon because a big portion of my mobile communication is falling into twitter and it would be inconvenient for it to just stop working without any warning. and ofcourse sending an international sms (which cost around php10) to turn it back on.
I’m still sad but hopeful

Inappropriate?thank you crystal! i remember you from the previous twitter support! i was surprised with the whole switch/change of the whole support/help!
i hope i still get the my shirt as promised! hehehe...
I’m happy and thankful!

Inappropriate?I seem to have the same problem. I stop getting sms for apparently no reason. Wouldn't it be better to add a notification somewhere that this problem has arosen so that we can quickly rectify it if possible?

Inappropriate? My sms delivery stopped a few days ago. I am not anywhere near my limit. My phone sms memory is not full. My phone is on 24/7 and the network reception in my city (Utrecht, Netherlands) is excellent.
I can probably fix it by sending a text message to the UK number, but this exercise is getting a bit expensive. It would be great if I can see and fix this problem, like Morghus suggests.
Is it possible to:
1 - make Twitter send an email a bit before it is about to turn off sms service
2 - allow one to go only and click "please try again" at which point twitter will sent a test message
That would be really cool.
Cheers,
Sjors
I’m bit sad, but could be just the weather

Inappropriate?same here....im under my sms limit and they sms jus stopped....im in Pakistan using Warid as my service provider
I’m sad

Inappropriate?I'm in the UK and on the three network. My friendly service provider charges me 25p for sending a text message to twitter (but because I have a smartphone, I have an application that can send it for free). However, when I lose signal (as described above) I also lose twitter updates, and the only way of getting them back is to text ON to twitter at a cost of 25p.
Some of the solutions above would definitely be welcome from me.
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate?Same problem here for quite some time already It's the FOURTH time now
I’m frustrated and angry
-
Inappropriate?I've had several @replies and direct messages today which have not come through on my mobile phone. Notification settings are on and my received SMS is at 0/250. Have been receiving texts and calls from others all morning so no apparent problem with reception (and I've been in one spot all day, in a good-reception area).
-
Inappropriate?hello again!
in lieu that the problem is the first mentioned (the whole network not replying). i was wondering if there are in the works a way to reactivate the sms twits online instead of having to text ON to the number.
if there is none i suggest it! -
Inappropriate?Having the exact same problem, since 12:00AM today, Dutch time...
I'm in the Netherlands (FryslâFrisia), using Hi (thus KPN's GSM-network). Reception should not be the problem, since it's fine ;)
Instead of having to SMS 'ON' to twitter, it would be nice being able to set SMS back 'ON' using twitter's website, especially since SMS'ing to twitter can cost up to €1(!!) -per- SMS (ofcourse depending on provider) :S
My SMS-quota currently is 0/250, so no problem there :P Also already tried switching "notification" to "IM", then back to "phone". It didn't work :(
I surely hope this will be solved soon.
I’m super cereal

Inappropriate?Hi I've received three or four tweets int he last three days - loads more should have arrived. I've uninstalled and reinstalled my phone. All alerts I want are set to 'on'. I've txted HELP twice and ON twice - no reply.
Please help - I'm getting annoyed!!
I'm on Virgin in England (worked fine up until Saturday morning !)
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?Hi, I'm having the exact same problem on a regular basis.. Including today and the later bit of yesterday (Dutch time).. Very annoying, irritating bug, 'cause that's how I see it... Seems the auto-disable sms notification service is rather paranoid. I'm using the Dutch Vodafone network, have excellent reception always and my phone is always on. So no problem there...
As suggested above, a "Turn SMS notifications back on" link on the website (and preferably also on the mobile web interface) would be more than welcome. It then becomes a workable solution (though, ofcourse, fixing the problem altogether would be the ultimate solution..)
Anyway, texting "ON" to Twitter a couple of times a week, at nearly an Euro per message is not a good solution.
PLEASE FIX THE PROBLEM!
Thank you..
I’m rather annoyed and irritated.. :S
-
Inappropriate?I'm also experiencing the same problem. I texted ON to the International Twitter number yesterday, and it worked until past midnight. Note that I did not set my alerts to stop after midnight. I haven't received any SMS alert since this morning.
-
Inappropriate?By the way, I'm from the Philippines and I use a Smart prepaid line.
-
Inappropriate?same here no pakistani telecom receiving sms messages i am loosing important messages :(
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I've had the same problem happened to me 4 times and each time I have to send an international sms to uk to reset it to on again. It is getting to be rather frustrating for me.
I'm in Singapore and the network should be very good since I received other smses with no problem at all.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Twitter dudes, please do fix this! It is very annoying and SMS notifications are really the best part of Twitter!
I’m dying
-
Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem. Haven't been receiving any updates on my phone for at least the past few days. I'm on T-Mobile in the UK. I've tried sending 'On', but with no result (I don't even get I response from Twitter, though I do if I send 'track' or 'help').
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?i also have the same problem, if twitter will not fix that probably i will die within few days without twitter sms :( save my life
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?same on vodafone PT, and quite a sum spent on reactivating.
not a day goes by when i get all the twits, most fly by with no messages at all.
most of my friends are already giving up on twitter (those international messages do get a bit expensive) and i'm sure i'll follow if this is not solved...
i must say i'm really sorry, i was already very addicted to this twitter thing.
I’m very sorry it has come to this.

-
Inappropriate?I agree. Reactivating is expensive, boring and with no justification. I'm already considering alternatives wich isn't nice because I really love Twitter.
I’m thinking on alternatives.
-
Inappropriate?indeed... and most of my friends are not really into this social thing (most of them are not even great computer friends at all, and i had a huge amount of trouble convincing them to join... :S
I’m also looking...
-
Inappropriate?I have tried in the last week to show my non-social friends how Twitter works. But, the site wasn't responding. Then, I got my buddy to sign up, but our test tweets weren't going through. I don't think I convinced him.
I’m having problems, too
-
Inappropriate? This problem keeps being unresolved... Texting "ON" doesn't even last a day now!
This makes me think of a late 1980s proverb, slightly modified:..
Who is General Failure, and what is he doing on Twitter's SMS servers?
*sigh...*
Perhaps we should mail crystal@twitter.com unless she's still following this thread?...
(Did anyone find an alternative for twitter yet, providing working sms notifications?)
I’m disappointed.....
-
Inappropriate?"The more people who report this problem, the more it gets noticed."
How many people shoukd report before Twitter even starts thinking about maybe looking at the problems? 79543245443987547632433287?
I’m extremely angry
-
Inappropriate?I found some alternatives (like Wadja, Groovr or Mig33) but none is as nice as Twitter. Maybe one of them will have to do if Twitter doesn't solve the problem.
I’m not happy
-
Inappropriate?twitter was nice, wasn't it. but, as they say, all good things come to an end...
there are a lot of threads discussing the same problem, and not one of them has input from the fabled '11 employees'.
in the beginning support seemed prompt, but not anymore...
-
Inappropriate? All of a sudden I got 8 Twitter-sms on my phone! Hopefully they keep coming!
I’m surprised

Inappropriate?i'm getting most of them through.
today was the best day for a long time, and i was able to actually use twitter.
sorry to know that it's not solved for some. -
Inappropriate?I'm having the same issue using SPRINT and I stopped receiving and the ability to send sms to 40404 on 12/31/2007. now, I can't even verify my phone. I spoke with my provider and I'm not blocked by any means. My quota.. Don't have one.. Unlimited. Now, I don't see the problem. I have a case open 80762.
I’m still annoyed, upset... ready to pop!

Inappropriate?Dear Friends at Twitter
I think that twitter is a great idea but this whole switching off of SMS is killing me. I am working in Lebanon and am trying to use twitter as a way for our school to communicate with parents. However almost every single one of the 300 or so people that are following our twitter channel keep getting their notifications to phone switched off. Every time they want to try and switch it back on they have to send an international SMS message to the UK number. There must be a better way to do this.
The minimum would be to allow them to switch the cell phone notifications on using the web interface to spare them the expense of repeated messages to the UK number just to switch the notifications on. The other problem is the the web interface in every case shows that the SMS notifications are on. If you have stopped sending messages to an account then at least tell the person on their web account that you have done so.
I thought twitter was the answer to so many problems. Now I am tired.
I’m very frustrated
-
Inappropriate?guys, still working on it, we haven't forgotten you. there are many steps an SMS message takes to get from your phone to Twitter; we have to research the entire process, and it takes awhile. please be patient, and in the meantime, try these things:
*send an update to Twitter to see if it posts; this may also refresh your presence information and turn updates back on
*try sending a command, such as get+username, like: get crystal to retrieve the last update from someone.
thank you so much for being patient, we're all working very hard to remedy these issues. -
Inappropriate?I signed up for twitter a week ago, and so far haven't been able to get it to work with my verizon phone (I'm located in SFBay).
I can send messages from my phone, as well as retrieve messages using the get+username command, but I have not received a single SMS from any of the people that I am following.
What's up?
