Hi guys, thanks for being patient while we look into the SMS problems.
As you may notice in various threads and Twitter's status blog:
http://status.twitter.com
we've been dealing with intermittent SMS problems over various carriers for the last few weeks, and we're trying to work with the carriers to figure out what's going wrong.
At this time we believe that the problem is occurring on the carrier side, as we're showing no errors with delivery on Twitter. Please be patient with us while we try to work things out with them.
Please keep in mind that we are researching this issue and actively working toward a fix. If you've submitted a support request, thank you!
If you're having this problem and you haven't submitted a support request, please do:
http://twitter.com/help
It helps us if you include details, such as your Twitter user name, phone number, and carrier information, so we can find and research your individual account.
We are compiling all of the information and working with our SMS provider daily; we will post another update when we have more definitive news.
Thanks,
Crystal

Inappropriate?I have this problem, but it seems to affect people who I'm following who aren't following me, I don't get their updates on my phone.
I’m kinda bummed out

I am having this EXACT same problem. Those who are not following are not getting sent to my phone -
yes! me too! -
@haikubirdie, found your info by user name. @magtime and @will, if you haven't already, please submit twitter user names to support@twitter.com or here:
http://twitter.com/help
without that information, I can't research your individual account. Thanks!

Inappropriate?Hi. Can you go to http://twitter.com/friends and see if device updates are ON for all the people that you're following? Twitter will only send you sms updates from someone you're following if you've set device updates to ON for that specific person.
Another alternative is to type "on username" (substitute "username" with the actual username) into the "What are you doing?" box on your Twitter home page at http://twitter.com/home

Everyone I'm following is on my devicelist, and I haven't had this problem until yesterday. (I've been tweeting for almost two years now). -
I am having the same thing -
yes, device updates are indeed "ON" for these people :/ -
Just tried it but unfortunately the ON command didn't work. It's a great suggestion though -- it's worked on an individual basis for me in the past.... -
Inappropriate?I seem to be getting one of my friend's updates, but not one of the others! Is the SMS messages affected if the user is using Twitterberry?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I can get updates from those who follow me, but I can't from those who aren't
I’m frustrated
-
Sadly, this isn't the problem for me -- I know the people I am having trouble with ARE following me. -
That's the same with me! It's sad. >.< -
Inappropriate?Count me in :_(
Only getting updates from people following me? Check.
Devices on for everyone? Check.
Problem started around the same time? Check.
I'm not using twitterberry but thought maybe it was related to brightkit or twitterific....
I'm with Verizon, fwiw....
I’m frustrated.
-
Same here for me. I don't know how many I'm missing today via SMS. This isn't the first time I've had this issue either. I'm getting really frustrated with this!! -
I've just checked my home page and saw a ton of updates I missed. I'm using Verizon too. -
Inappropriate?I'm on Verizon and I'm not getting any updates on SMS. I get txt messages but none from twitter. It started late last night.
-
I'm with verizon too, and having the same prob, and mine started last nite too. It's only happening with people that I follow that are not following me. -
Inappropriate?I'm not receiving SMS updates from the people that are not following me. Device updates are turned on for these people and updates appear on web or mobile web just fine. Been happening past couple days or so.
I am on Tmobile, but I don't think that's an issue since it's only the people that do not follow me. -
Inappropriate?UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Verizon. While the problem is not on Verizon's end they were able to see the twitter messages I have received and confirmed that none of my "missing" tweets were showing up in their system at all.
His best guess is that those messages are not being sent to the right mobile number, but how or why he couldn't say.
Also: I just installed twitterberry and all tweets are showing up.
I’m a little less cranky now that twitterberry is installed and working.
-
Inappropriate?Same here I am not getting any SMS's from Twitter. It started yesterday. I am on ATT
-
Me, too! -
me too, i even tried to send "on" in the message but nothing seems to work -
Inappropriate?I just realized I'm on tmobile, not VZ, I'm still having the same problem
I’m frustrated
-
I'm on tmobile as well, it had been working fine up untill 2 days ago.
Can we please get this fixed? This makes me not want to use Twitter. -
Inappropriate?Same problem here. Device updates are on, not getting SMS updates from all the people I'm following. I'm not sure who I'm missing, so I don't know whether it's specifically people I'm not following, but that does seem to be the case. New problem starting last night. I'm on T-Mobile.
I am getting all updates on Twhirl. -
Inappropriate? Is there any point to following this on here? Like, once the topic is on here, does this mean twitter people will start working on it?
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate? This is so completely frustrating. Is anyone going to start working on this from twitter's end?
I’m frustrated.
-
Inappropriate?I too am having this problem. I am on a Motorola Razr phone with Cignular/AT&T. I receive the updates from people who are also following me; however, those that do not follow me, I do not receive their updates. This problem began this morning (12/16/08). I have tried shutting the phone on and off. I have also tried turning off and on the Device Updates.
In addition to this problem, the updates that I post to Twitter are no longer cross posting to Facebook. Don't know if that is related or not but figured I should tell all of what my set-up is. -
Inappropriate?Ugh!!! I'm on Verizon and this seems to be a pretty typical issue. Is there anyone going to fix this? I've done all of the appropriate things. I've turned my phone off and on to check for updates, I removed all of my SMS followings and then turned them all back on again, I've done everything I know to do. Help!!!!
I’m getting very irritated!!!
-
Inappropriate?I'm on att, and like all the others am only receiving updates from those who are following me.
I've tried turning off all of my sms updates and turning them back on, reset my number on twitter, and turned my phone on and off.
Nothing's working.
I’m very frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Same, same, same, everything seems fine on twitter.com, no sms tweets. I'm on verizon, a razr, and have tried turning updates on and off.
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate? If you're on Verizon, please see this thread, click here
If you're on Sprint, please see this thread, click here.
If you're on AT&T, please see this thread, click here -
what about T-Mobile? I am on T-Mobile and having the same problem. -
Inappropriate?I'm experiencing this as well.
- I follow person "x"
- person "x" does NOT follow me...and I do not WANT them to follow me
- I get X's updates via twitter
- i DO NOT GET X's updates via SMS
- i DO GET SMS updates from others...and twitter.com shows them as being configured identically
I sent a note to twitter Monday AM. Still no word. This is maddening...as it is such a basic feature.
FWIW, I am on Verizon...but -again- I do get SMS updates from others I follow
I’m vexed
-
What is your Twitter user name, or your 6 digit req #? I looked for clevercommute but didn't find anything. -
Thanks for looking into this. My twitter account is crandcrand. I am trying to follow cc_njtt_mbntn via SMS. (I can follow them via the web just fine). -
Inappropriate?Does twitter even have customer service?? What is the point of this page 'getsatisfaction'? Is anyone at twitter listening or working on this problem?
I’m seriously aggravated
-
Twitter offers customer support via email. You can submit a ticket here:
http://twitter.com/help
or you can write support@twitter.com directly. -
I submitted a ticket at 7:40am this morning. So far I have heard NOTHING. -

Inappropriate? This is exceedingly irritating. Is anyone listening? Bueller? Bueller? One account of mine is feeding updates to phone (and a web site), but the company one I've set up is not sending to anyone except on the Twitter home pages.
I’m really, really peeved!
-
Inappropriate?Hi guys, thanks for reporting this issue. We're looking into it, and will post more news shortly. At this time, we're not sure what is causing the problem, but we're looking for the answer.
Thanks,
Crystal

That line that 'the company says this solves the problem' should not be on there though, should it? Because it took 24 hours for someone from the company to even acknowledge on their customer support 'website' that there is a problem. That is terrible terrible customer service. -
Unfortunately, when I use the feature that posts a reply at the top of the thread, that text appears automatically. We're aware that the problem is not solved, and we're working on it. -
My problem (jtambolitrns) seems to have been resolved. -

Crystal - thank you for following up...and I really do not mean to shoot the messenger or otherwise be negative when you are trying to help. But, I do think that Twitter needs to be more up-front about what "support" means...and what we can really expect when we open a ticket (which I did...days ago...and have no idea what happened to it...or how to check on it or escalate). Rather, if Twritter said (at sign-up) "this is an 'as-is' service...and it may not work as you'd expect"...I would look at it differently...and how different / lower expectations.
Sure dealing with the SMS carriers is hard...but it is that hard work that I expect Twitter to do.
Finally - I think it's fair to ask you when we will get our next update. I know you can't definitively predict when this will be fixed...but you should be able to set out a plan and execute on it. That plan should include periodic status updates.
Thanks for listening. -
I agree wholeheartedly with clevercommute - I opened up 3 tickets in Twitter's help page - days ago - yet I have never heard anything back on any of those tickets. So far, this 'getsatisfaction' page to me seems only to be a place where twitter users come to express problems we're having, yet we have zero indication of whether a twitter employee is reading this. Yet at the top it says '23 twitter employees ready to help'. Really? Help how? How do we get in touch with those twitter employees? Does a problem on here have to gain enough momentum before twitter pays attention It was so thoroughly frustrating to not get an answer for so long and to be unable to get a response about this problem. -
abby, I see no less than three separate replies from Crystal in this thread alone, the first one from 19 hours ago. She is clearly indicated as a Twitter employee. Surely that is indication enough that a Twitter employee has seen this thread?
Also, fwiw, Twitter as a company only has 30 or employees (according to their About page) and there are more than 3.3 million users (according to Twitdir when I last checked that site). And while I can't speak for Twitter, I personally can't imagine them staffing up more for customer support while their service remains free. -
mdy - my comment is about the tickets I opened up - not about postings on this page. -
also the lack of feedback from twitter for 24 hours was the point. -
I guess it's a question of expectations. I've been using Twitter for well over two years now and I've been following their growth from when they were a company with less than 10 people. So I'm used to my support tickets not getting a human response for several weeks.
I feel I don't have the right to demand an instantaneous response from them since I'm not a paying customer... but that's just me. It's also possible that I'm a lot more tolerant because I've personally gotten so much value out of my Twitter account... so I'm inclined to cut them some slack. I realize that's not true for everyone, though. -
I think my expectations came from the top of the help page where it says '23 twitter employees ready to listen and respond'. Perhaps not having that up there would set more realistic expectations for customer support for new twitter users like myself. I have only been on twitter for a week. This has been a great learning experience for me, and I know what to expect next time there is a problem. I had no idea there were only 30 or so employees at twitter. Sheds a whole new light on the subject -
I completely understand what you mean about that line being misleading! 8-)
The "23 employees ready to listen and respond" is automatically generated by this site, GetSatisfaction, which is a third-party site that's not affiliated with Twitter.
That line only means that 23 people from Twitter are registered users here. It unfortunately doesn't mean that there are 23 people providing customer support, even though that's clearly the message that's implied by the statement. I've actually pointed that out to the folks at GetSatisfaction several times already, but I guess it's very low priority for them right now to look into it. Getsatisfaction.com itself has even less employees than Twitter, if I recall correctly. -
mdy - thanks! I am glad I learned all this - and reminds me to add 'have patience' to my list of new year's resolutions......again! -
Inappropriate?I've read through the thread and I see a lot of problem reports and "me too" reports, but not a lot of confirmed Twitter user names, which we need to research. If you guys could list your user names when reporting a problem, that would speed things up.
I've found information for the following people, if these are in fact your Twitter user names:
* haikubirdie
* tevi
* anticlimatic
* dveldh
* yoitsing
* knabino
If you haven't already, please include your user name by commenting on this update. Also, if you know, tell us if it seems like you're missing updates from
(a) only people who aren't following you, or
(b) from everyone, regardless of follow state.
If you've filed a support ticket, feel free to update it as well or instead, in the spirit of fast fixing and avoiding multiple tickets or threads :)
Thanks,
Crystal -

Here's the relevant excerpt:
Update: We resolved a problem whereby folks were only getting updates from those whom they were following back.
