Is there a Twitter tool out there that can help me group my friends and organize conversations into separate folders - so I'm not overwhelmed by the daily deluge of Twitterrhea in search of the few gems of meaningful information?

Inappropriate?You can use a Twitter search engine like Summize Twitter Search to view tweets from groups of friends.
Just use a combination of the OR operator and the FROM operator.
For example, if you enter this as your search parameter
from:ev OR from:biz OR from:crystal
... you'll see a search results page that contains only the tweets from those three users.
You can bookmark the search results page to create your own custom group view.
