Overeager detection of "d" for direct messages

When posting non-ASCII (or perhaps non-latin) messages from the web interface, and a "d" is the first alphabetic character in a tweet, twitter thinks that the message is a "direct message" without a recipient, so it displays the following error:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Send 'd username message' to send a direct (private) message. You may reply to a direct message the same way.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

However, the message is not intended to be a direct message. Some examples:

Japanese:
頭文字D

Hindi:
बियरD

sad I’m frustrated
