Pagination, Timeline and Archive Fixes
Good news: we've made some changes that should improve your ability to browse back through your personal archives, recent history, and general time line. Specifically:
* The /home timeline increases from 10 to 40 pages.
* The /archive timeline goes 3,200 updates back.
* The older button should work
These changes are rolling out now and should be effective for everyone within the next few days. If you see any problems, please let us know!

Inappropriate? So what about IM? Ever going to give us an update, or is Twitter going to ignore all those threads?
I’m tired.
-
Sorry about the delay on an official response, we'll post an update soon. Right now we have no new news, unfortunately. -
Inappropriate? And why isn't this posted to the respective threads about these problems right here on GetSatisfaction?
Ignoring active threads about problems when those problems are being addressed or even solved, and instead starting a whole new one, is not the way to handle it.
It would seem Twitter (collective) still has a lot to learn about customer relations.
I’m VERY disappointed in Twitter - learn how to deal with your customers!
-
Hello. 8-) Crystal posted a link to this new topic in one of the other threads that talks about this problem the same day she posted this one. That's how I found this thread. 8-) -
I (partially) agree, Marjolein. Crystal seems to have posted links in related threads over to this one, but i'd be impossible to link them all to here (there's so many). It seems like whenever Crystal starts a new thread here, it's for support emails as well. For example, if someone sent in a support request saying the archive function wasn't working, she could just link them here and let them know the problem has been fixed. -
Inappropriate?Posting a note in one or even some of the threads about the problems being addressed, but not all, is still a major FAIL.
Surely it's part of Crystal's job to keep track of those things and connect back to us? Not doing so just continues the impression we might as well be talking to a blank wall - all that comes back is maybe a faint echo. :(
I’m feeling let down by Twitter
-
Inappropriate?@Chris Thomson - no, it would not be "impossible" at all, to link all relevant threads to here. It should be expected, and just done.
-
Hello. I agree that it *is* possible, since that's what I did 3 days ago when I went through the 17 GSFN topics that are currently tagged with "older button disabled." I cross-posted links to this new topic in all 17 threads. I also checked topics that were tagged with "older" and "older link" and tagged the relevant ones with "older button disabled" so they'd be easier to find in the future.
There may have been other threads that were tagged differently, but those were all the threads that I found after some searching.
All the cross-posting in the world won't make any difference, though, if people have unfollowed these topics or turned off notifications from GSFN. -
There was only 17 threads? Hmm, I thought I saw more. There's also some that aren't tagged "older button disabled", and don't have any links to this thread (until now), like this one, for example. My bad about it being impossible, though. -
Nice work cross-posting updates to those threads, Chris! 8-) I'll go ahead and tag them with "older button disabled" too, for easy reference. 8-) -
Inappropriate? It's a relief to have the 10 page limit lifted but frustrating that it's been replaced by a new one. Is this a stepping-stone to restoring full access to my archive or a permanent restriction?
I’m worried that I may have lost my tweeted travel journals
-
Inappropriate?Hi sheilaellen. 8-) From what I can tell, your archive currently goes up to page 43 only, is that right?
I've found that when I check my Archive at different times of day, I either manage to reach only page 43, or I'm able to go all the way up to page 160. I'm not sure why that's the case.
Since Crystal mentioned in the opening post that the changes are being rolled out over several days, my current plan is to wait a bit longer to see if things stabilize.
Edited to add:
In another thread also here in GSFN, I got the impression that Twitter intends to give each user full access to their respective archives. Here's the relevant excerpt of that reply from @biz:
@biz: If all goes well, the next engineering update will fix the "Older" button and give you web access as far as 3,200 tweets back. I understand that is still an unacceptable limitation—we will continue to work on it.
-
My archive is going back to page 43 only, as well. :| I have close to 2,000 updates total so I should be able to see everything but am unable to. -
Inappropriate?@Chris Thomson and @mdy,
Thanks for doing Twitter's customer relations work for them.
-
As Chris likes to say, this site works well with "user-powered" support. haha! Besides, I'd personally be happier if Twitter's support staff spent their limited time doing stuff that only they can do (like suspending those spammers and answering bug reports). 8-) -
Inappropriate?I'm having a problem scrolling down the page. It appears the listing of topics is below the last line I see at the bottom of the screen but there is no tool bar to scroll down. Help~
-
Inappropriate? Was just checking to see how far my Archive and Twitter page would go back to and they end at page 9 now?
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate? My archive goes back 49 pages at this point.
I'd appreciate if they would do away with the 'archive' and just give you a 'download all tweets' link like what TweetDumpr or whatever was supposed to do. You could even limit use of the link to once a week or once every two weeks in order to reduce potential server load. I don't think many people need or even want the ability but I would seriously love being able to get all of my tweets in one go. I could probably just format the CSV a certain way and load it into my Wordpress install and search it that way.
I’m annoyed but there is nothing here to get fired up about.
-
I would totally love a way to export all of my tweets. How about an XML dump? Other microblogging services could support it, too, and then users would have terrific data portability. What if other engines like Laconi.ca accepted Twitter exports along with account creations? Ooh... :-) -
Inappropriate? It's not 3200 tweets that are in /archive. I have at this moment in time 4011 tweets and I can only go back 62 pages in /archive. 62x20 != 3200. ;)
I’m neither happy nor sad.
-
Oh, lucky you! I'm only reliably getting to 44 pages (although last week it was 43). Occasionally I'm able to go all the way up to 160 (but this is rare) -
Well, I'm not sure I'm really all that lucky! Maybe Twitter gives you an extra page a week? ;)
I've checked my /archive agan and now I can only go to page 53, so it's really not reliable. -
Inappropriate?Considering Tweetscan are now offering downloads starting Dec 2007 for a price, how come Twitter don't do it? https://www.tweetscan.com/data.php
I'd just like some way to access old tweets..
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?@carocat: It's sad that it only goes back until Dec 07, though. Also, for me, with 15,000 tweets, it says it'd be $40 without replies, or $80 with replies. For those with less tweets it will cost as low as $9.95, which IMHO, is a good deal.
edit: I forgot to mention, that $40 is only for 6216.5 of my tweets, which is less than half. :O
I’m hoping twitter will allow us to see (or download) all of our tweets someday (even if it costs $40)
-
Wow, serious? I didn't even enter my details once I read it was only up until Dec2007. If it was all I might be tempted, especially as I 'only' have 4000ish tweets meaning it would be cheaper.
But $80 is a bit much.. -
Inappropriate? That TweetScan thing is a total rip. They're trying to make money off a free service and if I was Obvious I would definitely try to sue the pants off of them. It's not like they're even working, the archive goes back to Dec 07 'cause that is when they started archiving data automatically. I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to make money off their 'service' but that is really questionable. I've been tweeting since Sept '06 and TweetScan would charge me through the... well, something, if they even had a full archive of my tweets, which they don't.
I would gladly hand Twitter $20 for unlimited access to my archive for a year, with maybe other benefits. They really need to start monetizing, and this is definitely a way. An annoying way, but definitely a way. I see a yearly subscription with a "unlimited archive access w/ monthly complete archive downloads" feature and other benefits (like search, more extensive 'scheduling' of when to receive and not receive tweets.
I wish they had never opened Twitter up on anything but SMS. I think it diluted the service and all these issues people are having are clearly the fault of Twitter being more than it should have been.
I, and I'm sure the majority of the friends I have made through Twitter, would probably gladly pay a yearly fee just to keep web users off Twitter. Two cents.
I’m annoyed, somewhat
-
The problem is, if the web users were kicked off, then the API would have to say goodbye as well, or else someone else could create a web interface. And if the API was taken down, all of these apps (and many more) would break: http://twitter.pbwiki.com/Apps -
Inappropriate?I wouldn't mind if Twitter had a premium service on top of the free one that includes full access to /archive, IM service, individual toggling of followers and which Tweets to get from them, etc..
-
Inappropriate?Leave the API, leave content-providers (CNN, Politicals, etc) access... You could probably convert all the spam-prevention staff into people who just approve content-provider accounts with access to the APIs. Just remove website access for regular peons... I don't know. I live in a fantasy world where Twitter is SMS-only again, where there are no systemic problems with excessive growth due to people pointlessly flooding twitter with "haha i just pooped" through the web interface to all their other friends who are also flooding twitter through the web interface.
I don't know. I'm banking on seeing that Twitter is going to realize they stepped outside of the circle they should have been in. If we're lucky we'll never see IM access again (talk about turning Twitter into a non-stop chatroom!) and eventually they'll pair back how easy it is to use the service without a cellphone.
Like I said, I would gladly pay for Twitter, if they could stabilize it and give me a few perks.
Or give me SMS access for free and make idiots who use Twitter as a chatroom through the website/api pay for it.
-
I posted something about the last sentence here, extended, on my website: http://staires.org/2008/09/12/hey-twi... -
SMS would cost twitter more than web+api+im would due to SMS rates, so I don't see them leaving SMS free and charging for other services, but that's just my opinion. :) -
well, yeah, but i'm living in a fantasy world where twitter's "core service" (SMS) is free and all the fringe services (web/im/api/search/track/archive) are an extra charge. Those seem to be the things that take the most 'upkeep' as far as system stability goes, it seems, from the blogs and everything. You don't see a lot of "Our SMS service crashed irreparably, repeatedly..." in the blog. -
Maybe because txt messaing is barely used compared to all the other services? ;)
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/... -
Charging for the website/API would be a bad move. Most of Twitter's users go through Web or API, and they'd definitely lose the majority of those users if they decided to charge for access to those methods. SMS charges are ridiculous even though Twitter doesn't collect any fees... -
Inappropriate?crystal, there is a problem: two days ago, I was so happy when I discovered I could browse back my own archives from the first day I started twittering in May 2007 (a total of circa 80 pages, around 1600 tweets)
I am trying again right now and cannot go beyond 43 pages. What a shame!
What is wrong ? -
Inappropriate?I'm also only able to go back about 43 pages. This is annoying since there's about 2200 total tweets on my account. Meh.
I’m annoyed
-
43 does seem to be the "magic number" for our archives. I also consistently get up to page 43 -
Inappropriate? As of today, everyone should be able to access archive history up to page 160. If you're not able to, this is a bug. To Track this problem for people who weren't affected by the original bug in this thread, I have started:
http://getsatisfaction.com/twitter/to...
Please add to the new thread if you're currently having this problem. I have added:
* mdy
* sam
* K82
* plam

Inappropriate? Thanks for the update, and glad to know my tweets aren't deleted! I'm working on a case study that will give Twitter more exposure and increase its popularity, and I need my tweets from July 28th, 2008 (my birthday) give or take a day or two... so I can show social proof about building online relationships on Twitter. Any chance you can get that to me? My Twitter is @simonleung and you can also read my blog post from that day at http://simonleung.com/blog/simonleung...
-
Hi simon. I replied to you at another thread. Click here to see. -
Inappropriate?I see that the archive is only 3,200 tweets; the TweetBackup faq refers to this as a "bug" - is it really a bug, or is it a "feature" instead? I just passed 5,000 tweets and I'd like to have them all; is this something that could potentially be retrieved someday, or does Twitter discard the old stuff?
I’m fine, just curious!
-
Inappropriate?Meredith, not sure how far back they will go, but Google TwitterBackup or Tweetake, a couple of sites that will backup all your tweets.
I’m hoping this helps
-
Thanks! I am actually already using TweetBackup, and it was their FAQ that led me here. The question was "Why are there only 3200 tweets backed up?" The answer led to this page, and pointed out that that's how many are in the archive. What I'm wondering is if that's all that Twitter stores - whether they discard tweets that are older, or if they are just inaccessible through standard API methods and such. Basically, my question is - are they GONE, or are they just hiding? :) -
Hi Meredith. Old tweets can still be viewed if you know the exact URL for them.
For example, this tweet is widely considered to be the oldest tweet in the system and it's dated Mar 21st, 2006 --- and as you can see, it's still available and viewable.
Our inability to browse through pages of older tweets is apparently a technical limitation, and not a policy or a sign that Twitter deletes old tweets. -
Aha! Good to know mdy, thanks. A bit like Flickr users who don't have Pro accounts being able to access more than 300 images IF they know the URL for them. It would be rather a chore to find all of mine, but at least I know they're still there. Thanks! -
-
Or try http://mytweet16.com ... since tweet1.com doesn't seem to work for me. Maybe it's because I went to mytweet16 before the 3200 limit was imposed, or maybe it's because I had less than 3200 tweets when I went there... but tweet1 doesn't work for me. Oh well! -
Inappropriate?Twitter says I have 3,347 Tweets. When I try to back them up using TweetBackup, I only get the most recent 1400. When I try to scroll backwards on my profile, it hangs and I have to start over. Since I am a published writer, running an experimental Twitter novelette, I'd like to recover the rest.
Yes, I do have backup files for the novelette text, but not for the introductions and things change during posting.
Windows XP, Firefox 3.09 Hughesnet Satellite connection. Can someone pull these off and send them to me? Much appreciated.
I’m bummed big-time
-
Inappropriate?Clare Bell: Contact us at http://tweetbackup.com/contact and we will see what we can do
-
Inappropriate? Can the number be increased to 1,00,000? There are some people with 40,000 tweets already.
this is my simple program to archive tweets to pdf. it works only 3200-3300 tweets.
