Like most things in life -- it is a matter of taste -- and also on who you follow.

A few months i ago, i followed only 20 people. Today i follow 100. I've discovered that value of content is improving because the people i am following are more relevant to things i care about. And, as always, the brevity is a huge plus!

I had a relatively balanced ratio until I got into the 600s. Then Twitter did their auto-bot cleanout and I lost about 150 followers. Ever since then I have had 150 less followers than I am following (currently 971 to 826, or about 18%). I do NOT use a "follow" service.

I only follow people on Follow Friday, usually by doing a search on a keyword for topic that I am interested on (for example, "#cooking" or "#knitting" or "#guns") and then following people whose tweets seem interesting to me on those subjects.

I don't think I've ever followed more than 50 ppl in any given FF, and I regularly clean out follows that are no longer interesting to me, or turn out to be bots, or just tweet so much that it gets annoying. I also don't follow everyone who follows me (for the same reasons), and block pornbots, etc.

But it worries me that since twitter's "clean-out" a couple months ago, my ratio has stayed off by that 18%. I don't want someone suspending my account.
